Don't come here looking for answers because I don't have them! Looking for "guidelines" some of you may go by when it comes to determining if a cigar needs more rest or is just past its prime. Smoked one today and hated it the whole time. (Wont name any names) This is the first time I've smoked said cigar in over a year. The last time was nothing like this so I don't know if my tastes have changed since then, just got a bad apple from the bunch or if its past its yummy time. Any input is appreciated...

cubans are notorious for a "sick time": smoke some ROTT, then lose them in the stash for a year or three.

noncubans really don't have this issue. some can be a little underfermented ROTT, and need a couple months.

what, exactly, did you hate about it? a little more info about the experience itself may help clarify things.

This was a nc. Seems like the first one was spicy with some earthy and nutty notes. This one was like a wet towel and dead wood. Humi and hygro are spot on. Checked out a review and maybe its just the stick. Im guessing tastes have changed over the past year as well.

I don't know of any cigars that are past their prime in only a year...my guess is tastes have changed or bad stick, but more likely tastes have changed.

Edit - did you eat anything unusual prior to smoking?

Right on fellas ... I'd say a change in taste is the issue here. I didn't put 2 and 2 together but I had gastric bypass surgery back in June and a very common side effect is change in taste. I have definitely noticed it in some foods but didn't even think about it pertaining to cigars.

also, keep in mind, you yourself may be off. mental and physical state can affect how we percieve things. you could have smoked the first one on your A game, and this one on an off day, and not realized it.

or, they could have boned it. even the best make mistakes. o(

That and, call me crazy, but isn't spice one of the first flavors to mellow out as a stick gets "older?" Or is that just me?

So many different answers here but it's your taste that is what matters....taste changes because of many variables..medications...colds...allergies...your wife/GF bitching at you to do the yard...your kids puking on your brand new leather seats. Experience will be your best teacher over time...pay attention to it or at the very least keep notes/journals as our memories tend to turn into mush after 40.

Actually started keeping a cigar dossier a couple months back. Saw it in a shop I visited in KY. They sat it out in the lounge for whoever visited to paste their band in and leave some notes for others to read or help pick a next smoke. Neat idea so I looked it up and got one off Amazon. Wish I would have started this years ago...
