A great test case in the manner in which wrapper type effects the flavor of a cigar...

The more experienced brothers already know this stuff, but a newb or a semi-newb (like me) would benefit from purchasing all three varieties of the Tatuaje Cojonu 2012. It's a perfect way to examine not only the three wrappers, but how those wrappers effect the taste of a cigar. The 2012 comes with a Sumatra, broadleaf, and Habano variety. I smoked all three on consecutive days with the same beverage, and I was amazed at the differences. Most premium cigars are not released with such a wrapper selection. I highly recommend trying all of these.

I like the Sumatra more than the others. I thought it was smoother, and I experienced more flavor changes throughout. Your results may vary, but you should try all 3. Just my opinion.

Edit: I assume all three varieties have the same filler and binder, but not 100 percent sure. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong :)

I agree. All three are fantastic, but quite different. I prefer the Habano... Broadleaf is a close second. But what impressed me about all three is that each could easily stand alone as release... Most times it seems that a blend really works well with one wrapper and then maybe it's ok when released in another one. I guess that's kudos on the blend really, the binder choice too. Seems like the wrapper here is just great icing on a really good cake.

I just think this is a unique opportunity for newbs to get a feel for wrappers and and how they effect the flavors of a blend. How often do we see a primo released this way? Just sayin'

Same can be done with the 7th at a lesser price point also. In that smaller ring gauge you will see a more pronounce influence of wrapper.

I respectfully disagree, Craig. The distinction is more pronounced with the cojonu blend, imo. But you know more about cigars than I, so maybe I'm full of shit :) lol

I think either way it is a good way to tell the difference in wrapper. Just mentioning that there is a way to do it and save $5 a stick.

You can also do this with an Ashton Classic Majesty and VSG Wizard. I'm not sure if the Maduro No. 56 is same blend but different wrapper as well. All three are 6 x 56. I have been trying to smoke these three, as well as an Opus Tauros the Bull (also 6 x 56) on the same day and compare, but have never gotten around to it. I just can't smoke that many larger RG cigars in one day, or have the time!

gonna camp with mac on this one, although the point works either way. for me, smaller gauge shows flavor better. and, hey, $15 less for the tasting session. o)

maybe pete will rerelease the noellas reserva, and do a capa as well, for unlucky 2013? plz, canhaz?

also, zinn, good point on the ashton set, the bigger gauge all have the same core.

Actually was told by Pete that he considered doing the 2013 Noella Reserva with a Sumatra but didn't have the wrapper available to do it. That would be an interesting vertical tasting with the previous Noella Reservas, box pressed Noella and the old and new wrapper versions of the regular Noella.

I just read recently (not sure where), that the sumatra wrapper he uses is really pretty limited and that he picks carefully which cigars to use it on.
