So I stopped at my local B&M today to pick up a treat. I planned on picking up a t52 or 9, but I saw a tat j21 and decided to go that route. I picked it up and took a whiff and my giant snogh got in the way and I dropped the stick....I quickly looked around and no one saw. Here's where the moral compass com into play. I put it back and grabbed another stick.......then payed for the stick and left. I couldn't believe I did this, I went back after five minutes and fessed up and Tryed to pay for the dropped gar. The shop owner laughed at me then thanked me for telling them. Kinda embarrassed to tell this tale, what do you guys think? Has this ever happened to you?

I don't understand people that put a cigar that is not theirs to their nose. I do not want to own a cigar that you stuck up your nose and put back because you changed your mind.

I dropped (and cracked the foot of..) a Hemi Best Seller just last week... Didnt do a lot of damage.. but it was enough that you could tell if you took a good look at the stick...I just took it to the counter and paid for it... didnt bother mentioning the mistake to the owner.. he is a good guy, and Im pretty sure he wouldnt have let me pay for it if he knew what I was doing..

I dont think the crack I made will cause any issues... it will likely smoke just fine... I just didnt want someone else to deal with my mistake or blame the B&M, etc..

Its never bad to do what you think is the right thing... noob mistake or not.. there are plenty of other people out there that you couldnt get to do whats right.. no matter how hard you tried.. I appreciate people that make an effort to be different..

I applaud you for being honest. Very admirable thing to do as most probably wouldn't have. I work in our humidor all day so I see people drop cigars regularly but I won't make them pay for them. Damaged product is part of the business and happens, we just deal with it on our end. I always appreciate when someone does the right thing though, very cool of you!

I think you did the right thing. Take responsibilty for your actions is how i always work.

It reminds me last year when I was shown in the humi at the melia Havana hotel how to check the draw on a cigar by one of the attractive ladies who work there. I was told to hold the cigar on my fist whilst she gently blew into it. When she asked if I could feel it swelling I forgot all about her putting the cigar back in the box. I had to sit down and have a rum to compose myself!

I've done it before and I did have the internal dilemma. I told the guy and he was cool about it. I bought it anyway, felt like it was the right thing to do.

I have never dropped an unlit stick in the shop but I have dropped a lit Nub in my lap in an attempt to light my crotch on fire. Got many laughs lol.

Never dropped one but have come across many a cracked foot in shops, seriously doubt all were from dropping so I don't think it to be a big deal. As far as smelling goes, I personally have no problem with patrons smelling the foot of a cigar while holding in the middle, it's gonna be lit anyway and unless you have a habit of smoking them backwards has no sanitary repercussions. Seeing people smell the cap an the other-hand is a lil nasty!

I pulled a stick out of my humidor last week that i had aged for a year and walked out the back door and dropped it on my sidewalk! It cracked the wrapper in the middle. I was not happy but it happens. I lit it up and sure enough had problems with it, oh well I am sure I will do it again.

some basic etiquette in a humidor:

- it's going to wind up in someone's gob, not necessarily yours, behave accordingly.

- in a perfect world, you shop with your eyes. the senses, even touch, have too much at play here to make that completely practical.

- isht happens, and when you tell someone, it is so much better than them finding out (or making up details in their mind) later.

- triple these rules in the hyperpremium section. padron family reserve don't bounce, yo.

in the end, you did the right thing, and it means you can actually go back there and feel cool about it. i work around a lot of glass, and isht breaks a lot. gravity is not optional. if you hear, "CRASH damn SORRY!", you shake your head and roll with it. if you see someone scurry off and pretend they were somewhere else, it does stick in your mind.

In reference to the smelling/handling. These sticks are touched by so many people before the even get boxed up that people handling or sniffing would be the least of my concerns.

Just my .02
I've seen this argument a few times but I can't help but think there is a difference between a few hundred pairs of hands during the growing, fermenting and rolling process, which all takes place months or even years before they are shipped, and some guy with a cold man handling my cigar 10 minutes before I buy it. I don't know, maybe there isn't, just my opinion.

I'll give a gentle squeeze to anything in cellophane, anything not in cellophane is a gamble, IMO, and I know that going in. Then again, I have a very respectable shop in my area and I've never had any humidification problems with anything I purchase there. So that may be the difference. I'm sure some of the smaller shops aren't as closely monitored.
