there is a whole lot of talk about premiums, super premiums, HTF hooch, etc.. around here...
but what about diamonds in the rough?
what cheap liquors do you really like?
I cant skimp on scotch or bourbons.. I havent found anything "cheap" worth drinking in those realms...
but I have found some absolutely killer rums over the years that are also super inexpensive..
Rhum Barbancourt Estate Reserve (15 year) is a Haitian rum.. the "regular" stuff, called 3 star can be had in Port Au Prince for about $6 a litre... I picked up a litre of the Estate Reserve when I was last in Haiti in Feb 2010 for $9 I think...
It is one of the smoothest, most mellow, and flavorful rums I have ever drank.. absolutely excellent.. I would put it up against any premium rum that sells in the US market in the $50 price range all day long..
there are only a handful of places in the US that carry this stuff.. but it is well worth trying out if you can find it.. Its one of my favorite libations to pair full body cigars with.. its got enough taste to hang with and accentuate most sticks.. but not over power them or burn out your taste buds.. truely excellent stuff..
Another "cheapie" that I keep in the liquor cabinet and buy whenever I can find it is "Barrel 1" rum from Belize.. like Barbancourt, this isnt carried in a whole lot of places in the US (I think its only distributed in 10 or 12 states?).. and it is certainly not going to be found on the premium isle.. I think I paid $12 for a half gallon (plastic bottle) when I was in Belize in 2008... Ive noticed that the few places in the US I have see it over the years carry it a good bit higher than that though (may be something to pick up only when in Belize?)..
This stuff has an extremely strong scent and taste of cashews.. a pretty unique experience... like Barbancourt, it is smooth and is very good over a couple of cubes of ice only.. no mixer required..
the nutty scent and taste has kept me from trying to pair it much with cigars.. (very distinct and strong).. but its an excellent sipping rum for sitting out by the pool in the summer, or just screwing around in the yard, etc..
whats on your "diamond in the rough" list?
