Thanks for this. Until we take mental illnesses as seriously as we take physical illnesses, we are not going to gain a hold on these problems.

My GF sent me this letter this morning; Mental Illness is nothing to take lightly. Ive experienced first-hand how scary and unpredictable it can be.

I lost an Aunt to Mental Illness... Here in CA, family has very little course of action when dealing with the mentally ill. Despite being picked up multiple times for all kinds of endangerment to herself, every time she spent her mandatory 72 hours under psychiatric care, she would take enough anti-psychotics to say the words she needed to say in order to get herself released from State custody: "I will continue to take my medications, and I will no longer be a threat to myself or anyone else." It used to be that we would hear from social workers every 6 months or so, but then things went silent for over a year. It turns out she was catatonic in a hospital in PA... then she got herself back to CA, got free, and went back to "Looking for her Family." (Her schizophrenia has her thinking that we are all moving "away" and she has to keep hitch-hiking to catch up with us. As it turns out, the Pope has also planted diodes in her brain, my mother has 17 love children with George Steinbrenner, and I am the second coming of Jesus. Despite how many times we have gone before Judges, and Doctors asking for them to commit her, they won't because she has "the liberty to choose her own destiny."

Neither we, nor her children, have heard any word from her in over two years. I pray that she is safe, but I fear that she is gone onto the next life.

My Co workers son was in high school with Adam. They were in a tech club together and went to lan partys together. From everything he's told me Adam was just another very smart kid. Nobody knew he had any issues. I guess after high school he kind of fell off the face of the earth, no real contact with anyone. The FBI questioned his son and sons friends because they really have nothing. He destroyed his computer and hard drives. They have no records that he had any mental illness either.

Yeah, read this on FB. To bad our government cares more about gun control than taking care of our countries mental health issues. Just another example of Washington's ability of putting the blame on something else. We've lost our ability to prioritize our countries more important issues. what a shame.

It's a shame that seems to be the ONLY recent event, according to the media.
North Korea successfully develops long-range nuclear strike capabilities? Nobody cares.
16 poor, black youths die in Chicago in a single night due to gang activity? Nobody cares.
Fiscal cliff coming? Eh, that can wait.

Event that can push gun-control, and influence re-elections? RAM IT DOWN THE PUBLIC'S THROAT!

Um other than the Chicago incident, which I am not uup to speed on, the news and the government are working feverishly on the other events in your post.
Are you reading the newspaper and watching the news? Those subjects are being covered in depth.

Well said Adam!

Unfortunately there is still much stigma and shame associated with mental illness and not enough support and resources.

Mental illness has had a profound effect on my family for many years. My sister was bi-polar and died about 5 years ago just shy of her 40th birthday. My niece (14) and nephew ( 20) are both suffering from many of the same issues that haunted my sister. My Niece is being raised by my parents (both in their 70's) and my nephew is off his meds and homeless. We have all tried to help him but he will not accept it. My mother has written a book about the experience and is now a big advocate for mental health issues. In the book she details the struggles that she went through trying to get information and find someone who understood what was happening. The book can be purchsed here http://dorothyruppert.com/purchase-a-book.html or here http://www.amazon.com/God-Placed-Her-In-Path/dp/1615078509.

Unfortunately from the article linked in the OP, not much has changed in the last 30+ years.
