Sitting here smoking a No. 9. I know guys that let the ash stays on until it falls, I know guys who tap the ash off every so often. While in sitting here I've been thinking, the guys who let the ash stay on as long as possible day it helps the cigar burn cooler, which makes sense. But I've been thinking, when you draw on your cigar with that long ash, do you think the burnt tobacco is affecting the taste of the stick?

If you smoke slow enough regardless of the ash the cigar should still stay cool. Just a thought and a question to get others opinions. Thanks in advance for opinions and thoughts.

I ash at about an inch to an inch and a half usually. I don't like to have ash fall on the table/food/drink/clothes. I think it's personal preference, but letting the ash get too long can restrict the air flowing into the cigar and cause an uneven burn.

I haven't had the ash impart flavors. If anything, I have noticed it helps the flavor from becoming harsh or bitter (keeping it cool). Air makes the cherry bigger (hotter) so the ash helps keep that from happening. Also, I ash right before it looks as if it could fall.

Depends. I do a lot of smoking outside so I don't care if it just falls. If I'm smoking in a B&M and the ash looks strong, I'll let it go as long as I can. Sometimes the ash just crumbles and in those cases I ash frequently.

At a b&m, let it fall, they own a broom. At a place with carpet, inchish.

like to let it fall on its own, usually, but that is a process of knowing the smoke beforehand. hold the cigar vertically, and just tap your finger on the cut head, to test how firm the hold of the ash is.

oh, and MAJOR pet peeve is people who flick a cigar compulsively like they would a cigarette.

Like most here have said, I try to gauge whether or not the ash is about to fall and attempt to tap or roll it off, though most times I miss it. I do, however, pay close attention when smoking while driving. When I'm in the car I try not to let it get past a half inch, unless it's really flaky like danthebugman said and I give a quick tap every couple of minutes.

I let it fall. Personally don't care if it falls on me or not, nothing major as far as clean up is concerned. If I get the feeling the ask is about to drop I let the cigar rest in the ashtray till it ashes itself then pick it up again.

I generally try to shoot for about an inch. Since every cigar can be different though many times the cigar will determine when it is ready. Like Mo1281 said I also pay closer attention when I am driving.

Every now and again I will try and see how long of an ash I can get (kind of like testing a tape measure to see how far it will go) however I don't do this very often since I end up concentrating so much on keeping the ash that I miss out on the nuances of the cigar. In other words it's hard for me to tap dance and chew bubble gum at the same time.

For me it depends on the cigar, how tight the ash is and where I'm smoking. At home I let it go fairly long, if I am out I try to drop it every inch or so.

Come on guys, fess up! You know when we're all sitting around the lounge at the B&M, we're all going for the longest ash-- and we're all surreptitiously checking out everyone else's ash-- it's a metaphor, pure and simple!

99% of my smoking happens in my garage (with concrete floor) and I always change to into "cigar smoking clothes" when I'm going to smoke so I don't care if the cigar ashes on me.
