I ruined my netbook by leaving it in the rain. I'm thinking of getting a Kindle Fire HD 9" tablet as a replacement. Already have an Amazon Prime membership. I will use it to surf, email, listen to music with headphones, and watch video via wifi on my patio. Does anyone own one of these? What do you think of it? Do you have a tablet other than Fire? Thanks

I used one on my way to FL last week. It was a 10 hour trip one way so I used it for video mostly. Now, I don't own this tablet myself but, I would say using it for about 20 hours is a good trial lol.

It feels great in the hands and doesn't get hot after being used for extended amounts of time. I thought the video quality was stellar! The only thing I did not like about it was the user interface. I found it to be a little complicated even for an Android based tablet. That might be personal preference though.

For the money, I am really thinking about getting it or the Nexus 7.

On my nexus 7 tablet replying to this and I would definitely choose the nexus 7 over the kindle fire, but I'm not heavily invested in the amazon eco system and have been a fan of most the nexus branded google toys, so I might be alittle biased towards this tablet

I just won a Nexus 7 at my work Holiday party. I own an iPad 3 and I have to say I actually like the Nexus 7 much, much better. The video quality alone sold me, never mind the speed of the thing. Awesome tablet for sure.

I've had the Nexus 7 for over a month now. Bought the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 for my wife for Christmas so no feedback on that one yet.

I opted for the N7 because of the built in GPS. Bought the KF for the wife because she ain't getting any younger and I figured the larger screen would be easier to read.

Now, I'm using my antique laptop to type this. I also have an Acer netbook. Haven't turned that on since I got the tablet. I could almost live with just the tablet if it weren't for the lack of external inputs. No CD / DVD and no option for SD card limit the tablet. But for reading, listening to music, watching video, light internet surfing and words with friends, you can't beat the N7. Also love the GPS.

I bought a blue tooth keyboard / cover for the N7 and that over comes any typing issues. Picked it up on Ebay for less than $20 shipped.

All good info gents...Thank you. I know that reviews on tech websites are the best way to get info on this stuff. However, those chaps don't smoke cigars, so I can't trust them completely. I would insert a smiley face here, but those keys no longer work. lol. The only thing keeping me from buying a Nexus is the small size. I'm accustomed to a netbook with a keyboard, which I place on the lap while smoking cigars on the patio. Is there enough viewing space to truly surf the net, check email, and all that stuff with a seven inch screen?

The email reader is superb, but if you want to reply to an email the typing gets old on the touch screen. Surfing the net isn't too bad. Most web sites have mobile versions which are condensed. For instance, eBay has a nice interface. It's great as an MP3 player and now I'm looking at getting into a bluetooth speaker. Already bought bluetooth headphones and love them. Got the Motorola behind the neck, can't remember the model number.

I use it to keep up with email, play words, listen to music and gps directions. Of course, it comes in handy to look something up on the web real quick.

Oh, and the wife and I have opened our gifts to each other and she loves the Kindle HD. Looks really good to me too. Tried to transfer a few books onto it and it's not seeing them. Not as easy as the N7. It's drag and drop.

They make a 10" inch nexus, which is really nice, but cost a little more (I think 399). I personally don't own one since I had already purchased the nexus 7 before it was released so I can't give you any first hand review of it though.

The 10" Nexus is made by someone other than Asus. I think it its Samsung, but not certain. I have the 7" and love it.

Thanks. I'll check it out. Since I'm already a Prime member and paid the bucks, I might want to try the Kindle. I'm still not sure. I appreciate your assistance. insert smiley here. Merry Christmas, brothers.

Might as well try it and see what you think. Amazon will take it back no questions asked within 30 days I think.

Tax time!! So, HeavyD what did you end up getting? I'm still leaning towards the Nexus 7. Just wanted to hear your thoughts if you got one or the other.

I have a kindle fire, been using it for about 3 weeks. It is decent but I constantly have to reconnect the wifi because it consistently fails to load pages and times out. It also has a lag if you get to many things going. It was meant to read books, and it's good for that. I am waiting for these tablets to become more computer like with the use of Windows 8. This download App stuff is stupid, I want a real big boy computer in a tablet.

I still have not decided, and in the meantime using a netbook that's a couple of years old. Asus Transformer Infinity is in the lead currently :) But i'm in no hurry.
