So as I was compiling my data for Jfire's panel, I was thinking about why I smoked so many Torpedoes and Belicosos already this year ... and then I thought about why I seem to have a propensity for buying them (providing the same blend does not exist in a Lancero or Corona). I mean, really, most marcas will offer a Toro that is similar in size, so why do I keep reaching for the Belis and Torps in the absence of Coronas and Lances?! I am not sure why, but I would like to hear what you all think about why it is you do (or do not) like them?

I just admire the way they are rolled. It seems to me that it takes a lot more skill to roll one.

I enjoy the mouthfeel of a beli or torp while its still a larger smoke. Mainly becaus lance is my go to vitola. Just my $0.02.

one, cans or bottles. or red versus white glasses. the way something hits your palate changes how you taste it. try cutting really tight, then cutting a little more off every 2/3 inch. it does change things.

two, they are harder to roll, so can have better rollers than parejos.

three, they look sexy. o)

but, again, this is just me.

I tend to steer away from them. I guess I like the more traditional looking cigar. Or at least what I would consider to be "traditional looking".

Belis and Torps are usually slightly more expensive than toros and usually the same size (with slight difference in length due to the cap difference) so I tend to grab the Toros, but I usually cut the cap to about the same width regardless of which one I have so I don't benefit from the additional flexibility the Belis and the Torps provide.

There may be some truth to this in my case as well... but I started with these, and "graduated" to the smaller ring gauges (Lances and Coronas)...

And then there is this as well - I usually start with a V-cut on the tip, and then straight cut it if the V isn't giving me the smoke output I am looking for... and then in some cases, I'll do the angled "dickman" cut.

Yes, but I do have a hard time really admitting to their sexiness when they are:

a) going in my mouth and...
b) phallic

sorry to derail a little.

What is the difference between a beli and torp?

I don't really care for torpedoes - when i first started smoking cigars 1 1/2 years ago i had a few torpedoes that had tight draws (even after clipping more). So, i have this "fear" of the torp. Plus, i tend to like a V cut better than a straight cut and you can't v cut a beli or torp.

Generally the length of the cigar and the length of the taper. Also a ring gauge difference if memory serves. And for the record, V cut works great with Beli or Torp imo.

I agree with Ecks, but I don't think there is much consistency in the way these get differentiated, as there is no "standard" for what constitutes a belicoso or a torpedo. That said, I think the length of the taper is the key.

I tend to reach for a beli or torp first. The cigar that got me hooked was an mx2 beli.

When i cut a corona, churchill etc, i use a palio guillotine and i barely "skim", for the lack of a better term, the cap off trying to take as little filler as possible. On a beli i can cut pretty much as much or little as i want. The cap is more forgiving for error. A tight draw on a beli is sometimes easily fixed by cutting a little more. Just my opinion, i could be wrong.

As a side note; i prefer a v cut on a lancero.

I like the way they taper down. You don't have to open the mouth as wide which creates for a better seal, in my experience.

Because 1) it's more comfortable to smoke and 2) because if you V-cut them they look like fish

I like belis because of the "sloped" taper and the way they sit while I'm smoking them.... But I adore petit belis like no other. The el baton that thanks to CA everyone is talking about; not a huge fan of the stick but I smoke it occasionally just because if the size, prob why I liked the wolfie so much...
