Smoking on the golf course

So gents tomorrow i am going to try to have a stick for the first time on the golf course. I have been playing golf 12 years but have never really thought about smoking on the course. Usually we are in a skins game or something and I just smoke after.

Any tips for a golf course cigar newbie?!

Buy a cigar clip that will attach to your golf cart. If you don't have one, most cart's windshields will have a rubber mount that will cradle your cigar. Only place it there when the cart is immobile. Take your cigar with you when you are off the tee or on the fairway. It's nice to have when you are waiting for your turn or looking for your ball. Always leave your cigar back at the cart when you putt. This is what I do... so you can develop your own routine.

Bring extra sticks in case you lose or damage your cigar. Bring extra lighter too.

don't forget a cutter. always easy to find matches (or another smoker) in a pinch but more than once i've ended up having to use the end of a tee or my teeth as I get to the course without a blade.

actually this is one place where the 60RG craze works; they don't like to go out and don't need much maintenance. admittedly don't golf, but for working outside or anything where i might not be focusing, but using the smoke for background, a big bastich works well.

once you DO get accustomed to where to place and how to manage, THEN pull out something you want to pay attention to. o)

also, john is spot on with the back up plan. i will add that you may need to plan a spare or two in case of necessary sharing as well.

I love my Cigar Minder clip for the golf course, but I learned to clip it to my golf bag and not the cart after forgetting to grab it and loosing several of them that way. When it is clipped to the bag, it always comes home!

I used to take cigars that I didn't care for to the course, that way I wouldn't feel bad if I left it somewhere or stepped on it(destroyed a Tat Noella Reserva once that way). But then i wasn't playing as much so I decided I was going to smoke cigars I enjoy on the course. I do agree that Lanceros and small ring gauges don't work well on the course unless you want to keep relighting them. I always have my cheap 3 flame torch(with punch on the bottom of it), $3 double blade cutter and a Bic lighter in my bag.

Yeah I use the windshield technique, and have been known to drive off and leave it... As it flies off.. I have always seen those clips, and always thought I should get one. I do also tend to smoke less quality smokes on the course with larger than my preference ring gauge. They are beefier and hold up better, and always bring a few extras, for you personally and for people in your groups.

Like cmac said...tend to not bring super premium cigars. I tend to concentrate more on my game than the cigar and it is almost a waste to bring a high dollar or super htf smoke. Also grab a durable smoke that tends to stay lit no matter what and good construction. Love to smoke mj12s and now mcw's now. And like others said. Bring back up lighters....a bic is primative but more reliable than a torch for when your torch gives out on you

Great suggestions here already. I like what Craig said about putting the clip on the bag instead of the cart- smart. One of my clips is probably still attached to a cart somewhere...I like bringing a variety of cigars to the course in terms of vitola, strength, etc. This year I started bringing cigars that I very much enjoy smoking as opposed to yard 'gars or whatever. I was smoking the latter for years on the course and while it was nice to be smoking while playing, I just didn't enjoy it as much as I would have liked- so- now I bring cigars that I want to smoke. For me the pleasure is intensified when I am smoking great cigars and being out there enjoying my favorite hobby. I am not bringing Cohiba 1966's, but will usually have a Lusitania, Upmann 2, a QDO Imperiales, a Mag 46, a couple RASCC's or shorts, a BBF or whatnot in my bag to choose from. Churchill is my vitola of choice on the first tee and then if I feel like have more when I am done with it I pick from what it left depending on how I feel.
This is making me jones for warmth...BOTL mid-Atlantic golf outing this summer?

Most important tips on the golf course have been said already except for one. Enjoy the game and cigar as you relax with your friends. Life is way to short to smoke a crappy cigar or let the game frustrate you. The cigar clip, lighter, cutter are all great ideas. Enjoy brother man.

I started by bringing cheaper Fuentes and maybe a Romeo real but like some of the others said, I just wanted to smoke stuff I really liked on the course. I generally will smoke a robusto on the front 9 and a Churchill or DC on the back.. You get used to having the cigar pretty easily

While not explicitly golf related, I have attached an inexpensive punch on all of my keychains so I'm never without a cutting tool.

Also, I'm in the club of smoking a few smaller cigars (robustos, etc) on the course. Not a fan of one or two smokes that last the entire outing.

I have taken some great ideas from this thread already. I also thought about the fact I am playing with two maybe 3 other buddies. I am bringing 5 sticks with me just in case they want one. Also, not bringing anything to crazy so I wouldn't be upset if they smoked it for 20 minutes and pitch it.

I love to enjoy a stick or two while playing a round with some buddies. I'm not the most competitive golfer in the first place, so I don't mind if a cigar takes my attention away from the game for a bit.
