For the most part the XD and the XDM are the same gun. I have smaller hands and the XDM has 3 different back straps so it is adjustable and fits my hand a little better. The XD has only one barrel length (4") and the XDM has 2 (3.8" and 4.5"). If you can go to your local store and put each in your hand and see what feels better to you and your eye.
UM... The XD comes in a Subcompact model with a 3" Barrel..

I want a Springfield. 45 XD-M Compact. They are very hard to find in my area. My buddy has one and it is a beauty. It fits like a glove and looks extremely well made. If I can find one in my area I will nab it.

Actually a local gun store is showing a Springfield 9mm XD for 399. Is that much different than the XDM?

As to availability, used it looks like there are a few around. I might have to step down to a 380. I guess the best thing would be to go to the range and have a look.
Pass on Springfield polymer guns.
You can find used Glocks, M&Ps, S&W Model 35s, CZs, Berettas, Sigs, and other fine weapons in that price range if you look around. Don't buy something you don't want right away just to have it.
Smith & Wesson offers a more budget line, that uses bits of the M&P and some older designs. http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product4_750001_750051_811049_-1_757751_757751_757751_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y You can order them for usually around ~300.
I disagree.. The XD is just as good as a Glock if not better!
The XD and XDM are the same gun more or less.. I have both.. Only difference really is the grips and the storage case.
Also the Difference between the XD and M model is $100 difference.
I have a XD Sub Compact 9 and love it. It has a 3" barrel...
I have a friend whom is a sheriff and he has the G26... He likes my XD9SC better and He even shoots better with it... Glock's are over rated!

You can talk preference all you want. But, none of that negates they have an inferior mechanical design. Sorry.

My current carry gun is a Kahr PM9. I like it a lot!
The only other 9mm I could find (at the time) that was smaller was a Rohrbaugh and it was over double the price.
With my local climate, body type and taste in clothing I can't comfortably carry anything larger.

Get a Glock 19 and be happy. I've found that all the others are just trying to be glocks (although I have a 9mm Shield I love). And as far as concealed carry goes most people won't notice anything smaller than a S&W 500 tucked in your waistband so get a gun you shoot well, a good holster and belt and spend the rest of your $$ on ammo and training.

I went and tried out a few pistols this past week, several have been mentioned here. I'm wanting to find a sub compact that is comfortable for my girl as well. She hates how large grip is on our Glock 22, and will barely even hold it because of that. The range guys were telling me how I need to look for something with a single stack, and suggested a Walther PPS 40 caliber. Of course, now I have to find one to try out..

I really liked the XDM that I shot. Still might order one up and be all "oh shit, thought it would fit" if I find one of those first ( = This shortage is murder on trying to find something.

I'll throw in my. 02 too
My Cary is typically a Springfield XD9 subcompact (3" barrel), sometimes an XDm 40 with 3.8" barrel. You can see where my bias is :D

I would agree with the not going to the .380 as well. Depending on your situation and number of times you plan on going to the range, ammo costs are something to think about. Its amazing how many more rounds I shoot with the 9 over the 40 and 45.

Like cigars, try a few if possible, then decide what you like. In the end, it needs to fit you.

To some of the other posts, the xdm also has a match grade barrel, which most of us won't notice the difference, but that also explains some of the price difference. I won't get into the whole glock vs sa debate, but I do like the palm safety on my xd's (like it on my 1911 also). To each his own.

I doubt she'll like the PPS is .40 .... Very snappy recoil. I would try one in 9mm first.

She will get over it. We want them to both use the same ammunition. I can't afford the space/weight of trying to keep 2 different calibers on the road with us.

I really owe my wife she is the best. We paid a couple bills with the tax return and then she let me use the rest of the money which included her half to buy a new gun. Springfield XD - M. 40

I have brought quite a few females to the range for them to spend a day trying all different types of pistols, so as to make an informed decision when it comes to their carry gun. Every single one has greatly preferred my Kimber Ultra Carry .45 to any other handgun they shoot that day, whether it be Glock, XD, M&P, etc, etc, etc. I've also heard the same thing from several of my friends, that their wives/gfs seem to prefer the feel of a smaller 1911 to the rest. Might be worth a try for you to introduce her to one. *shrugs* Never know what somebody will prefer until it's in their hands.

I don't think the makers of any of my firearms were attempting to produce a Glock.
Sure they are an excellent option with a proven track record but they aren't for everyone.

And I really don't think you can make such generalized statements about what people will or will not "notice" and expect to be taken seriously.

While my statement may have been general it is based off my own personal experience. That being said I've found that most people are blissfully ignorant of the world around them and seeing a bulge in your waistband is more likely to be a cellphone than a gun. Again a general statement but based on my experience. YMMV.
