I've had a Maxtor for a few years now; I got it for a song at Staples. Never an issue. I think any of the major players would have a reliable product & its just price point at this time.

I have a few broken WD's in my tech graveyard. The Seagates refuse to die. I have 2 of them that I use for network media and network backup usages.

FYI, both seagate and WD external HDs will stop working if you drop them by accident......

Just the answer I was looking for, thanks brother. I've heard about WD's dying pretty easily but wanted to see the opinions round here. I'll look into seagates as well.

NAS is handy, but not the solution for everyone. 1 of those 2 that I actively use, was a 3TB network Seagate. I wanted something for backups, and to hold all of our ripped DVD's for apple TV usage in the RV. That failed miserably. It still works great for network backups, but it doesn't do streaming media very well. Thats why I'm running 2 of them right now.

Years ago a friend told me that if you want to stop your computer from crashing, but a UPS and get a Seagate HDD. I did both, and haven't had an issue since. Sure they can still fail, but now I run both the drives off of that UPS for cleaner power and I personally haven't had any failures since.

^^This^^ I lost 500 gig of data when I accidently dropped my Seagate which was in an enclosure. It fell about 2 feet off of a coffee table ONTO a carpeted floor.

Keep in mind most SATA hard drives only last about 5 years. If it's just for basic storage and nothing really important externals are fine, I keep anything that's super important in the clouds.

I won't be streaming from this so that's okay.. Mainly it'll be for backups and my ginormous music collection.

I definitely will be hooking into a UPS with rest of my gear, those things have been a lifesaver so many times.

The WD blue series and green series had quite a few bad batches, especially the green when they first were bringing them to market. The Caviar Black series are, my personal and professional opinion, the best budget (meaning not enterprise grade) hdd out there. They only beat out Lacies because ive had more WDs longer. Ive actually never had a Lacie go out on me, even after being knocked off a desk while running.

Cheers :ccool:

Thanks for the input brother! I may have to check out these Lacies, I've been hearing a lot of good things lately.

LaCie is tops for me. I have 3 units that I've had for 4 years, no problems at all. Seagate would be next for me, then WD. I've had 2 WDs fail completely and end up in the trash, but 5 others working fine.
