well, the NYtimes article about the recent agreement states that it's still uncertain what we agreed to. It seems like we just penned a threat to North Korea. It would be absolutely unfortunate for NK to walk their talk.

Im afraid its just more sabre rattling..

Remember, peace has never been declared in Korea.. there was simply an end to hostilities.. TECHNICALLY North and South Korea have remained at war since the 50's.. There is an armistice agreement... but there is no peace treaty in place..

We have always agreed to support ROK in the event of hostile act by the north.. We have had a significant number of troops on the ground in the ROK since the day hostilities ended.. and thats not going to change any time soon, regardless of the political situation in Korea (we want troops in SE Asia for strategic reasons other than the ROK)...

All this "new" agreement says is that the US will assist in retaliation against the north if they cross the DMZ... something we have always planned on doing (we have had troops on the DMZ continually for over 60 years.. if someone fires them up.. you can bet your sweet ass we are going to retaliate..)..

It doesnt address a first strike or an invasion of the north in response to going nuclear or any other action they might take...

Just sabre rattling...

Something none of the leaders in the North have ever given two shits about in the past... and something theyre not going to give two shits about moving forward...

If you want to effect the north.... SEVERE sanctions is the only way to make things happen... they are barely hanging on as a nation.. the people are starving.. they have no shelter.. they have no economy.. etc.. the Chinese support them.. but only at the bare minimum level..

cut off the food.. the people revolt (or die).. problem solved in about 10 years...

the problem is we will tighten the belt on them (like we have done in the past).. but we arent going to let them starve.. and since their leadership couldnt give a damn that the people are suffering.. we will have little or no effect on them.. and they will continue to let their people starve, while they use the money that could have been spent on farm supplies and warehouses for distribution of food to build ballistic missiles, submarines, and knock off T-52's...

Let's not forget that their missiles are capable of delivering nukes to 19 of our states and we wouldn't hit back them being so close to S. Korea, China and Japan. The only way this nonsense stops is if China threatens to pry their suckling lips from their teet if they don't STFU. Without Chinese aid most N. Koreans would starve.

It's a very delicate situation. It's true we need to be prepared to help defend SK from military invasion. But we cannot cut off the food. SK is terrified of tens of millions of starving North Koreans crossing the border to escape the chaos and famine that will attend a collapse of the NK regime just as much as they fear a military attack.

Absolutely true timj219...

Many of the ROK soldiers and secret service guys that I have met over the years have told me that they are torn over what the right solution is...

While they would love to see a unified Korea during their lifetime.. they fear that unification would decimate their economy, bring an increase in crime, etc..etc..

They like the standard of living that they have attained.. and know if the North and South re-joined any time in the near future, that things would change dramatically.. Many of them arent prepared to give up what they have worked very hard to obtain for the sake of unification..
