Hey all, will be travelling to Tokyo, I remember there are a few guys here who live over there and/or have recently travelled there. Any tips, suggestions as to places to visit, restaurants etc? Have visited other arts of Japan ie Kyushu but never have gone into Tokyo. G1

I'm up in Misawa (3.5 hour train from Tokyo). Been to Tokyo a half dozen times or more. If you happen to be a veteran, the New Sanno Hotel is cheap and very nice.

I recommend Gonpachi, aka the "Kill Bill" restaurant (the place that Tarantino based his Japanese restaurant off of for the "Crazy 88" scene in Kill Bill). It's cool if you're a fan of the film, and the food was actually very good.

For night scenery, Shibuya Crossing is awesome, as is Shinjiku. Or if you're near the Kill Bill restaurant, Roppongi Hills is just up the street and a nice glimpse of modern yuppie Tokyo (an artsy courtyard with a great view, and skyscraper apartment buildings with malls on the first floor).

During the day, the big temple downtown is a cool cultural thing to visit, if you want there is a cool river boat that goes from a downtown park and drops off at the temple (activity plus transportation in one!). And of course there is Tokyo Tower (it's actually a really cool view from up there).

Basically, if you're prepared to pay ridiculous amounts of money for everything and don't mind mega-citiies, Tokyo can be fun. But if you find New York too busy and are on a tight budget, you might hate Tokyo, lol.

Thanks will be staying at the Ritz in Roppongi do that Rest sounds like a must visit. Looking to try the local flavors as opposed to the popular touristy places. I know JD was recently there but I'll be with my wife so no crazy stuff. The outside market at Tsukuji is sef on my list. G1

Imperial Gardens are a must! Very beautiful and filled with history. When I was there it was still very busy and expensive (like 20yrs ago). Even so it is still very beautiful and the shopping district is off the hook and as nj said alot like New York. The night life there is crazy fun though so you must hit a few big bars there. Also the Down Town lighting is wonderful. Get some yakisoba while your there....GOD I MISS THAT STUFF!!!

You can make yakisoba, it's easy! Most Asian markets have the sauce.

So couple of questions, Ive read that cell phones run on a completely different system, so I'm thinking I'll just leave mind here. How about portable hot spots?
Getting from Narita to Tokyo, best to take the train or bus?
Any places to must see? Def going to try and do the fish market and outer market there. G1
