If your thinking a cabinet is in your future go with a giant cooler and start saving for a cabinet. I speak from experience now that I own 3 winecoolers.
If you know you will eventually go cabinet then get coolers, you can start saving now for the future cabinet or just get more sticks!!!

Really a hard call to make for someone else... but here are my .02...

if you absolutely must purchase new... or you are 100% set on a specific brand/model of wine cooler... the igloo/coleman cooler route is going to be a much cheaper option.. and you will likely get a lot more storage space out of it (a 150qt igloo is going to provide more space when set up properly than all but the largest wine coolers)..

but.. if you are willing to go the used route... and are not 100% sold on a particular brand/model.. you can probably get into a wineador for roughly the same money as you will spend on coolerador...

Used wine coolers ranging from 12 bottle to 28 bottles are all over my local craigslist.. all the time... normally for next to nothing in cost...

I paid $20 for my 12 bottle cooler.. it was new, and still in the box... its a "cheapie" (emmerson brand).. but it seals like a champ, and keeps a steady 65 temp all the time.. it had been a christmas present for someone that didnt want it, and she was willing to take what I would offer her just to get it out of her house..

I threw in 2 shelves (made myself) and 4x trays from Forrest .. along with a single tray from cheaphumidors.com.... at an all in cost of about $65 (including shipping)... and for less than $90 I was in business....

there are several wine coolers on the San Diego CL right now that are in the $35-$120 range that look like they are probably in decent condition.. that are about the same size as the one you are already looking at.. to include a couple of vinotemps.... Im betting if they are asking $35-$120 that you could walk away with the low end one for $25.. or one of the higher end ones for less than $100...

Of the two, I wouldn't consider anything but the wine cooler. If you can need/want the temp control it's a no brainer. If you don't need that part, I'd still rather have a non-functioning wine cooler, than a coolidor. To me it's an aesthetics thing. Both will do the same thing, but a busted wine cooler will look a lot nicer than a cooler.

Guess ill start cooler then wait and see. I like ccs but never participated in aging them (didnt know to) last count I have 14 coolers (from getting somewhere w/o one and buying one for beer and ice) so using one (or two or 3) won't inconvenience me.. Doing the math that's more than enough for the money I'd spend on cc boxes to start my rotation. I'd never have more than 10 boxes aging and the cooler would be out of sight during that time until I pull a box and put them in a humi to smoke.

Both. I have full, and partial boxes in the coolidor in the basement, and the wine cooler upstairs with nice cedar drawers with single sticks in it. Whenever I run out of something upstairs, I go down to the basement, and get a 5pack and put it in the wine cooler. The cooler was only around $60, plus the cost of two lbs of beads, and holds a TON of boxes. The wine cooler with drawers is NOT what you want for boxes. Most aren't wide enough to hold two boxes side by side. They're inefficient for boxes unless you have only a couple of shelves.

I think the temp control is important. I've always placed more of an emphasis on humidity rather than temp, and I think the temp is something I've sorely overlooked.

With that said, I am leaning toward the wineador for three reasons:

1) Temperature regulation.
2) Longer-term storage space.
3) Aesthetics.

Any recommendations on how to get this done?

Thinkin my closet in the basement where my other dors are stays about the same temp most of the time. Never checked tho. The cooler would be in the bottom corner of that closet. So I guess I need to put a thermometer in there and monitor it

i think we could collectively turn the wineador into the artform. POTUB, how'd the visit to Chula Vista go to scope out some wine storage?

It would be cute if you got a coolidor that matches sean's. Plus, it would save you the money to buy those 30 boxes.
hahahaha, sorry but that was funny. Can't wait to see this beast, Jay! Let's start the build soon!

Go for the biggest wineodor you can find. My wife hated the cooler, she is a smart woman.

Yo, Jay. Just get the winedor... I only did the coolidor as a cheep temporary storage option while I tried to convince Nicole that a wine fridge was a good idea. Heck, let's both get fridges (because I am going to need one before this summer) and we can build them out together.

Yeah, I am getting some extra $$ in the next couple of weeks from a side job I am working on... this would be the ideal time to put it past Nicole.

Does anyone know anything about the Danby brand of fridges? There is a 35 bottle for pretty cheap and never been used but I haven't seen anyone say anything good or bad about this brand.
