I've grown my own leaf, are there others like me?

If you've ever wanted to grow your own cigar tobacco plants and make your own cigars from them, I have done it. It's not easy but it is very rewarding. If you think you might just be insane enough to try it, and be willing to risk your marriage, go to Tallahassee Craigslist, farm & garden section, and seach "cigar." I am doing my best to be the "Johnny Tobaccoseed" and get others to join in on the fun.

That is awesome. A friend and I have thought many times about how we could grow tobacco here in MI. Now thats its a medical marijuana state there is stuff for hydroponics all over the place which would probably be the best way to attempt it since we have no previous experience. Haven't gotten around to actually doing it yet of course, I'm always spending money on a finished product to smoke. Do you have any photos to share of the process or the final product?

Being from Southern Maryland, I've grown up near some tobacco fields all my life. Most got replaced with soy in the early 90s, but a few hang on. I've helped harvest it, and its no joke. I can imagine that making your own cigar is a ton of work.

It's great to hear that someone has had success. My long term plan is to have some sort of permaculture farm, and tobacco, hops, and grains will hopefully be a part of it.

I've grown some tobacco in my garden the last couple years thinking I could roll my own. Plants did ok and picking the leaves was tricky. The drying/cureing did me in though. It's too wet and cold here near Seattle in the winter to really dry anything, even in the barn. Stuff molds. Same problem with my onions, couldn't get them dry and they molded.

Very cool. Listening to Steve Saka talk about tobacco plant genetics at one of the Padron farms on the BOTL safari dispelled any hope/desire for me to do this myself, but wishing you the best of luck.

A co-worker of mine did this last year. He grew it and rolled the cigars himself. Most were plugged to some degree and flat-tasting, but he did it himself, which was a lot of work and rewarding for him. I admire his efforts and it makes me appreciate the skill of the people who create production cigars for the big companies like Oliva, etc.
