Hi again everyone! I know I've been absent from the board. Last time I was absent was due to surgery in October to remove part of my colon due to repeated attacks of diverticulitis. Well, sometime in December and unbenkownst to me, a few of the stitches gave way and for two month, fecal matter had been seeping into my body cavitiy. I say unbeknowst because there was no pain and the abdominal swelling that was there they though was from the effects of the surgery, which is common. Late in Feb. I started having pains in my side but thought I pulled a muscle from shoveling snow. After the pain got worse, I asked my wife to drive me to the ER. Next thing I knew, I was being prepped for emergency surgery. It turns out that I ended up with Sepsis and my entire body was infected. I spent the next 4-5 weeks in the hospital and was sedated and put on a resperator for the first two of those weeks during which the doctors weren't sure if I was going to make it. I think the words they told my wife were, "I can't say for sure that he won't make it." Translation: He might make it but there's a good chance he won't. I had trouble breathing on my own (hence the resperators), ran a 105 fever and was packed in ice (literally) to get it under control, had 18 bags of IV fluid hooked up to me, a temp trach done to help me breath so they could get me out of sedation, caught a case of C-Dif (not sure how to spell it) while there as well. The surgeon was able to re-do the surgery from October but this time they had to give me a temporary colostomy. It'll be reversed eventually but I have to heal 100% before they can do it or I risk the same thing happening again and I also have to lose weight (I've lost 43 lbs so far).

When I came to, I was told how bad it was. I think I remember a nurse telling me if I had waited another day I may not have made it to the ER. Plus the first couple of weeks were touch and go. Needless to say, it was a pretty trumatic thing to hear and I spent a lot of time praying, thinking and thanking God for giving me another chance. I started thinking about what was important to me....family, friends, etc. One of the things I thought about was the generosity of the people I've met through cigars. Not only sharing their cigars with me but their knowledge as well. I'm the type of person that, if I can't enjoy something, I have to be away from it completely; which is why I was absent from the board. But the more I thought about it, the more I missed it and one of the things being in the hospital made me realize and appreciate more are the people I've gotten to meet and interact with on here.

I'm still not at 100% and have a long recovery road ahead of me. I'm not allowed to smoke yet as I'm still healing and I'm trying to get my humidor back to where it was and see which of my sticks I can salvage (my wife didn't know what to do and since I was in the hospital for so long, the humidity took a big drop). I'm not able to work for at least another 2-3 months but that's okay because my position at the company was phased out when the client I worked for cancelled their contract. So, once I'm able to work, I'll be sending out resumes. But that's okay because I'm ABLE to sent out resumes....the outcome very easily could have gone the other way. I know this might be a little sappy but I since I have the opportunity to say it: Thank you to everyone that has taken the time to share their knowledge with me, those that blew up my mailbox with gifts (and there were MANY instances of that happening) and those whom I've had the chance to meet up with in person and share a smoke with. This board and it's membership have been incredibly friendly toward me and I look forward to being more active again like I was before I got sick. Thanks everyone!!!

Holy hell man. I'm glad you're ok. Sounds like you're going to be able to smoke any type of cigar you want for the rest of your life once your healed up... And never have to work again.

Omg... That is a lot to go through brother. I am glad to hear your alright but at the same time I am a little freaked out for you. Just take it slow and heal up. This place is full of love and I know all of us will keep you in our thoughts. It is good to see you on here and maybe we will get a chance to talk more with you since you will have some free time. I just wish it was under better circumstances.

Thanks for sharing the tough story. Your appreciation for life is contagious and it helps put things in perspective. I'm believing in your full recovery and look forward to reading about your first cigar you choose for the celebration.
All the best brother

Thank you guys for the well wishes and prayers. Praying is what got me through my ordeal, especially those from family and friends that were praying for me. It just let me know that God isn't ready for me up there yet and I still have work to do down here. But it definately put things into perspective about what really matters in life (family, friends, etc.) and what is secondary (job, money, possessions, etc.). I'm glad to be back on the board and hopefully no more hospital stays except for the one to reverse the colostomy once I lose enough weight and am healed enough for them to do so.

Holy shit Pete, how did I not know about this. None of the guys from Goodfellas ever said a word, glad to hear you're bouncing back. Dude if there's anything you need just give me a shout and you damn well better let me know when you're up and about so we can spark a few up (cigars!). Feel better bro.

Hey EVP I read this last night and I couldn't bring myself to type up a message seeing as none of my words seemed to do justice to what I wanted to say.

You and your family will definitely be in my prayers. I know you've heard it but I mean that from the bottom of my heart. As I read your message it brought tears to my eyes. God has a plan for you that's why he wasn't ready to take you. You have a great soul and you will recover through all of this. I know at times it can be hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel but know we are all here for you willing to help and guide you through even the darkest of times. I know I am new here and we have not met but I still wish you all the best.

May god bless you and your family. You will be in my prayers with lots of love.

Sincerely,
Jonathan

I think only a few of them knew....Tim, Paulie, Andy, etc. I can't smoke, but if you ever want to stop by, I'd be honored if we sat on the patio and you smoked a few while I just enjoy the smell. I like having visitors.

I can't even imagine how scary the whole ordeal must have been. Best of luck in your recovery, ill be sending some prayers your way.
Really wasn't too scary for me because I was unconscious during the critical times. By they time I woke up and was off the sedation, I was out of the critical stage and the danger of dying was gone. It was scary hearing about it though. I felt bad for my family because my wife, my mom and my aunt all took shifts staying at the hospital and watching me. Sometimes my wife didn't leave until 2:00 in the morning. The hardest part for me was not being able to talk because of the trach. I had to communicate by writing everything down unless the person was able to read my lips.

Thanks Jonathan! You'll find that this board has some of the nicest people you'll interact with and there's no drama BS like there are on some other boards. Besides, always nice to talk to a canuck (lived in Saskatchewan for 6 months back in 96).
