I am currently looking into upgrading my storage. I was thinking of two options as stated in the title. I have an Avanti 1.7 cubic foot cube refrigerator in the garage we don't use. I was thinking of cleaning this out adding media and turning it into my storage unit(will not be running, just using it for the seal.) Or i was going to go out and buy a mid sized cooler (60 quart or so). I own the fridge so it would allow me use the money towards media (don't know which way i am going kl or beads), hydrometer, and some cedar. Any disadvantages to the refrigerator over the cooler?

thanks for your time and advice/

Free is always my first choice... if you decide you need more space later.. or want to do something different.. you can always go pick up that cooler later.. if you already have the fridge on hand.. thats the route I would choose.. all you have to do is clean it out really good.. move it to a temp controlled part of the house (closet somewhere?)...insert some RH media.. insert some sticks.. and youre done..

you can add cedar (via boxes, trays, or whatever) down the road if need be....

Im going to guess you can fit between 250-300 sticks in that thing if you organize it well... should be more than enough to handle what youve got and give you adequate room to grow for a while.. for FREE (again, my favorite price!)..

That said.. it only took me about 3 month to grow out of my 12 bottle wineador (slightly smaller than your fridge) and end up back in my overflow containers:)

Lets hope that doesn't happen soon. Just eyeing my first box purchases soon. Wanted the space

Having used both, I'd say go with the fridge. I spent far too much time unpacking and repacking my cooler trying to find a stick that got moved to the bottom. The fridge is way easier for daily use.

an unpacking/repacking solution for larger sized coolers is to put them on their end as opposed to the way they are intended to be used.. and to put some shelves in there.. and just use it like a fridge...

I was going to do something like this with my igloo 60 qt.. but the slots on the side of it are designed in such a way that it would have required me to cut the shelves in something of a T type shape to get them to go all the way to the bottom/back of the cooler.. so I decided not to do it (ultimately I am a lazy man.. and didnt want to work at it that hard)..

fridge PROs:
-you already have it
-it's just slightly bigger than what you need right now
-fridge seals are usually solid
fridge CONs:
-basically need to clean the crap out of it, you do not want to find out there are mold spores somewhere

cooler PROs:
-new means never in contact with mold
-you outgrow it, it still holds tasty beverages later
cooler CONs:
-purchase necessary

either way, you are going to need media (i swear by heartfelt, but many guys rock the litter to great success, dave being one IIRC, so in the cost effective column), but the fridge sound like the win since you already got it. worst case, get some cigar boxes to use as dividers/ trays, and the extra cedar in there will have the added bonus of stabilizing the RH. you need boxes, let me know, i think i found your addy. o)

I got a small fridge I use, you can put a temp controller (Johnson A419) and it will keep it at 70 degrees, but the problem with the fridge is air flow . You will need to move the boxes weekly or the cigars closest to the humidifier will get be a bit to moist

Doesnt the condenser also suck moisture out of the unit? If it is too much over 70 in the house the ac is on so I don't think it would need to be running.

If you are keeping your house somewhere around 70... a closet, a corner in a basement, etc.. will do just fine..you shouldnt really need to have to cool the box..

neither a 60 qt cooler or a small fridge like that will require any sort of active humidification either.. a pound or so of beads/KL and youll be rock solid on 65 RH with fast bounce back with very little effort..

Honestly, I wouldnt even worry about air circulation... again, we arent talking that large of a box.. and since this will likely be your primary storage unit.. Im guessing you will be opening it regularly (possibly daily..).. which will allow "fresh" air inside and will circulate whats in there just fine..

Me personally.. I would go with the free fridge... go grab a 4lb bag of KL from wally world ($4.00).. head to the local B&M and beg a couple of boxes out of them (Free - $2.00 per box depending on your B&M).. and be done with the project for less than $10.00 total invested..

Hell.. I'd offer to ship you some boxes... but Im guessing you can get them from your local B&M cheaper than the cost of mailing some from here (possibly free)..

If not, let me know.. and Ill put several in a box and send them to you... Ive probably got a dozen spare, empty boxes just sitting in the closet right now doing nothing..

I brought the fridge in the house and im cleaning it off. It has been in my garage for a while. going to wipe off the inside of it tonight. Most likely going to get some kl for right now. I am kind of worried about this make a wish II thing grr got me into. I really have 0 room left in my humidor. If it works ill be happy. If not ill order beads and use the KL as a bridge. Next stop will be to the b&m for boxes.

Now should i do a 5 to 1 bleaching on this or do you think mild dish soap will work just fine.

Keep up posted on your fridge progress man, would really like to see how it goes.

Like Dave said go to your B&M for some boxes, if you happen to drop in there a decent amount I am sure they will let you walk right out with them esp. if you tell them its for humidor use. I just scored another box today from my B&M.

In order to speed things up, i bought some KL. i have some gladware containers in there now and hopefully in a few days time i have a stable RH. If i don't like how the KL is working ill be ordering beads. I just needed more space sooner rather than later.
