So, I'm a complete newbie when it comes to pipes and tobacco and was wondering what are some of your favorite pipe tobaccos?

And honestly Utah sent me some to try and I haven't had a chance to light my first pipe. I'll let you know what I think. I might make time tonight.
thanks, curious to hear your thoughts whenever you get around to trying it out

Man, through the years I have had many favorites, but I have settled on just a few blends that are still in production, and one that is no longer made but I have a few pounds of it and smoke it only when i cant control the urge to smoke it. Here they are in order.
Penzance
Night Cap
GLP Sextant
Margate

and the out of production is called Spartans English. You wont find much about it, nor will you find many people that have it. Last year P&C had a blend labs contest, and Spartans English was one of the finalists. Unfortunately, it did not win, so it is no longer made.

This is NOT how this thread is supposed to go
nope, nothing out of line here. all looks fine. i'll allow it. o)

ON TOPIC: get to where you recognize virginia, perique, burley, and latakia. it's the pipe equivalent of learning the properties of different wrappers, or the basic identities of country of origin.

I like the basic frog morton myself, but i am making a effort to try them all after reading about how they use the original as a base then add or subtract stuff to get the other blends. huh i only wish you had sent me something that i would have a return address on and would have vowed vengeance so i could lob a small hand grenade of samples your way but thats not on topic so i wont mention it here.

The Frog Morton On The Town is the one I like the best. I have some Nightcap I need to try but it gets good reviews. I love Penzance, Stonehaven (almost out), and I've had Margate which was awesome too. I'm still new to this as well and I've bought alot I still need to try. Shortcut to Mushrooms is good too.

This came from puff.com

These are very nice blends, especially if you are a newbie or are wanting to acquaint yourself with latakias. They share several things in common: they are all built around latakia and Virginias; they have very low nicotine; they are very easy on the tongue; and they are very mild mixtures. Some pipe smokers object to what appears to be some type of casing (flavoring agent) that is added to the mixtures. Personally, I'm not sure that any type of flavoring has been added -- it's entirely possible, of course, but if so it strikes me as being quite unobtrusive.

Here's a rundown of each one:

Frog Morton -- This resembles a straightforward English mixture. It contains latakia, virginias, and possibly some cavendish. It's very sweet, and the primary flavor is the smoky, woodsy latakia. Nothing complex or challenging here -- it's a very simple pleasure.

Frog Morton on the Town -- This is kind of a super-mild oriental or even Balkan mixture. There is a little less latakia here but a good supply of sweet oriental leaf. It's a little more complex than the original Frog Morton and also a little creamier. It's my personal favorite.

Frog Morton Across the Pond -- Instead of the type of latakia used in the other Frog Mortons (which is the commonly available Cyprian variety), this mixture uses the almost-extinct Syrian variety. The flavor profile is different here, as Syrian latakia has a taste that combines the smokiness of the Syrian with hints of incense and red wine.

Frog Morton On the Bayou -- Basically Frog Morton with a dollop of perique added. The perique adds a peppery spiciness to the blend. For the record, this is my least favorite of the series. I'm a perique junkie, but I don't care much for how McClelland uses perique in their blends. I would not, however, let my tastes dictate what you try -- some smokers love this stuff, so it's certainly worth a go.

I consider these to be probably the best introductions to latakia on the market, at least if the pipe smoker in question is not a recovering cigarette smoker. The problem is that I don't really like mild blends -- I like tobacco with lots of body and nicotine. Nonetheless, they are quality mixtures and quite a few pipe smokers swear by them.

I would agree here. Try the constituent tobaccos which make up the blends, then you can figure out what blends you want to try based upon what constituent tobaccos you like.

As to what I like? Gawith, Hoggarth Louisiana Flake is my favorite. But, I also enjoy a bunch of other things: Dan Hamborger Veermaster, Sam Gawith Full VA Flake, C&D Bow-legged Bear, Two Friends Deacon's Downfall, Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake.... And that is just to name a few of my favorites.

Hope that helps.

Oh yeah, looking forward to something arriving that you ar owed.

Peace of The Lord be with you.
