On Monday night, I purchased a LP# 9 at the Outlaw South location in Overland Park, KS (suburb of KC). When I initially lit the cigar it hardly had any draw. Not a plugged draw, but like I was sucking in and there was a bypass before the foot of the cigar. I would suck on it and hardly get any smoke in my mouth. I've seen this before where the outer wrapper is damaged or punctured and you either suffer through it or you put a finger over the damaged area. But never on a LP.

This goes on for the better part of 20 mins and I'm starting to get a bit aggravated. Externally the stick looks ok. No funny burn lines or deformities near the coals. Then the cigar starts getting real hot along the entire length of the cigar. Like nuclear real hot!

I'm more than frustrated now and I finally decide to blow through the cigar several times. After doing this I went to knock the ash off and the center the ash was like a volcanic rock. I sort of chipped this off and it took away more than an 1" of my cigar. After about 30 mins invested in getting this stick to smoke right, it starts acting the way an LP should act. I will say that I really didn't enjoy it so much after all the fuss. Wasn't worth the $16 on Monday night.

I probably should have said something to the store attendant, however I was with a group of 6 guys and I'm the most experienced cigar smoker and I didn't want it to come off as I was being a cigar snob. Instead I sat at the end of the row of easy chairs and finished the evening.

Yesterday I smoked a couple of other cigars that I picked up in the same humidor. They were all great, including a T-52.

Do you think I had a tunneling issue going on? Was it over humidified? Any ideas? Disappointing but probably my first bad experience having smoked over 50 different LP sticks.

Interesting.. I'm assuming it was just a construction issue with that particular stick, because you said you tried other sticks from the same humi, and they were fine, so it doesn't seem like a humidification issue. I've smoked quite a few No.9 as well, and never experienced this. I'm glad you could at least salvage it. Also, at least it didn't ruin your night. If I was really upset this evening, I would have asked for a replacement, but thats just me.

Have you entertained the idea you were not sucking hard enough lol... Just kidding...

Ligero burned out in the middle possibly? Tunneling? Did you open it up take a look you should have taken a picture post it :) dissection is nice... Am sure if it wasn't a over humidified issue and construction or ligero issue am sure they (being DE ) will replace it... If I have any issues with cigars I take a picture of it...

note: I had this woman at a bar try to reach for a UF-13 I was lighting for a friend ( I was toasting the foot ) and she told me I wasn't lighting the cigar right.. I was like o ya and she told me you gotta suck it real good. An awkward pause happened and my friend looked on in horror I could read his eyes saying don't let that woman slobber all over my cigar lol...

You should avoid smoking cigars directly from the shop humidor. Take them home, let them rest, then smoke them. I regularly bring a home stick ( which I bought at the shop anyway ) into the shop to smoke because they perform 100% better.

Since it was only my 2nd time in the shop and I was an out of towner, I just didn't feel comfortable bringing it up to the shop at time.

As far as autopsies, it really wasn't the time since I was in the shop smoking.

I am just looking for some ideas on what caused this from more experienced smokers. Or if anyone has experienced anything similar to my experience.

OP: your stick was over-humidified. I just smoked an over-humidified FFP and it drew like a rock, along with getting really hot but not showing any visible problems. My fault. Lit up one from a box afterward and it smokes like a dream.

Thanks LPFan. I appreciate the insight.

The "bypass" draw still baffles me. The only time I experienced that is with a damaged wrapper.

This one didn't plume the generous smoke in the beginning as you see with most LP's.
