Smoked several cant recall the names of most. No flavors I cared for all seemed to burn fine.

Except for some Honduran Classic Maduros that tunneled worse than anything I have ever seen. The color also bleed off them on my fingers pretty bad. I was very disappointed because they smelled "barnyard" wonderful before lighting and I got my hopes up on the first one.

I do like Indian Tabac Super Fuerte from his cheaper line though.

Its funny a lot of people on here really dont like Rcoky's and Monte's but a whole hell load do in Tennessee. Rocky Patel, Arturo Fuente, Padron, and Montecristo are probably the most liked brands here.

sam adam's effect/ starbucks conundrum. they are everywhere, try to be everything, and do stuff OK to well, but not GREAT. they market the shit out of it, get it in people's faces, so that's what they go with. rocky to me is now up there with general and altadis by and large.

and, yeah, you go on a beer nerd forum, they are not usually talking about sam adams. people on javaman's level are really not all about starbucks. because they are exploring the frontiers, not sitting at the median point. same here on BotL. if you LIKE RP cigars, cool, and enjoy them. hell, we probably have guys on now whose first real smoke was a rocky. but a great many of us have moved past that, to a little less well trod pastures.

Rocky, Montecristo, and many other brands that aren't necessarily favored here on botl are some of the top selling cigars in most shops across the country. I think that is a small part of why they get such "hate", being the bigger companies there is a big disconnect from the cigar geek. Some of the big guys are faceless brands so there isn't much of a connection personally to the cigar smoker, and I think that is a very important thing here. Rocky Patel cigars are blended for the average consumer and while people here can find a line or two they like, I think most here find a lot of the lines to be "watered down" blends that don't have a "wow" factor. On the other side of that are the smaller brands or those that have a face that seem to do no wrong with whatever they release to some people. But make no mistake, no matter how big or small, these companies all have the same goal to sell as many cigars as they can. Some do it with clever marketing, some do it by constantly releasing products, some do it relying on hype, some do it relying on celebrity, some do it by concentrating on making quality cigars and some do it by building a personal connection with the customer.

i appretiate the input, but what could you recommend to me that wowed you or is really good. Also i usually smoke $11+ cigars, i dont know if that will make a difference but ive had some cheaper monte's, rocky,s, and fuente's, and the cheaper ones do suck. but yea if you could recommend me some good ones id appreciate it.

Price point doesn't mean one cigar is any better then another. There are tons of sticks to be had under $11 that can out shine a pricey stick. Tatuaje, Undercrowns, Fourkicks, Headly Grange, illusione, CyB, JDN, Oliva, Fuentes, Herrera Esteli and the list can keep going.

What "wows" me may not "wow" you. Last one I had was the Herrera Esteli.

Blockhead,
TheTatuaje Havana VI line and Tatuaje Brown labels have always wowed me. (Unless the VIs are under a year or two of resting in my humi. Thats another story) Those would be my replacements for anything Rocky Patel. And also cigars that I've relied on for quite a few years now to bring me great enjoyment every time. This coming from a CC smoker who thinks h'se better then all NC smokers........(Insert CA Teacher quote from above :) )

I feel I have some experience to talk about this. In 2008 we built a small walk in at our house. With in a year I had 500 to 1000 sticks of RP in there. At the time going by b&m word only it is all I smoked. At least two to three vintage 90's a day. I went to Mexico on vacation in 2009, met a brother from here that introduced me to the site and to other cigars besides Rocky Patel. With in four months I had bombed, sold, donated, etc. all rocky sticks I had. I started buying tat, Fuentes, Olivia, Dpg, CC's and so on. After getting away from rocky stuff I noticed other cigars not leaving a residue on fingers and lips. They claim it isn't dye but I have a video to show otherwise. They originally produced decent stuff and you can smoke it and love it. It is all about what you like not what others think. But coming to a site like this it will open your eyes to many other brands you would not have given a chance with out a site like this. Today I smoke stuff way different that four or five years ago. As you progress in the cigar world your flavor profile will evolve. So moral to this all is smoke what you enjoy and try other things.

Blockhead,

Here is my suggestion....Go to Stogies & Ale (1800 Carothers) in Brentwood. They have Undercrowns in the humidor for $6.50 to $7.50 depending on the Vitola. Walk in the humidor and go to the shelves that are opposite the door. The Undercrowns are on the second or third shelf up from bottom about in the middle of the shelf. They also have a great selection of Tatuajes and some Illusiones. Go into the humidor and turn right. There is a good selection of Fuentes immediately to your right. The Tatuajes and Illusiones are just past them and extend to the corner. There are several shelves of them there and you should be able to find them pretty easily. There are also some La Aroma De Cuba's at about ankle level below the Tatuajes. The Mi Amor is an excellent smoke for around $10.

Just a suggestion for some good brands that can help you broaden your horizons.

Enjoy!

Rupe,

That's hilarious I'm at franklin cigar today, and before I had even read this I've already lit up an, Aroma de Cuba "MI Amor". It is an excellent smoke, and yes ive been to stogies many times and had my way with their Fuente selection! But thank you very much for the input, and ive been wanting to try a tatuaje but franklin cigar doesn't have them yet. So I guess ill wait a bit until they do.

I bought some Decades and they have been pretty good so far. Before I knew about some of the other brands out there I usually went with RP and I was never dissatisfied.
