Hello everyone, I want to start by saying that I am very appreciative from the warm welcoming! I have a few questions to ask to help me with my smoking enjoyment. I want to think i know enough about smoking but I really dont!

I was wondering if it was true that when you smoke, you should always light cigar with a match or a torch? I have heard mix thoughts from those who I smoke with on occasion, but they are far from experts.

I was also wondering if it was true to not smash your cigar into bottom of ashtray when your finished with your smoke? I was told by a guy in canada actually that you NEVER do that to a cigar, it leaves foul odors for those around you so just let it burn out on its own.

Third, and last, I was wondering if anyone could suggest a not so expensive cigar that could be a good smoke for an everyday smoke? I have some that I consider "nice" cigars, but IDK if they truely are "nice" but I am looking for something to smoke on a regular basis that wont break the bank.

I hope that I am not posting this in a wrong section or am going overboard with questions. I am seeking guidance from the group! Thank you all for any help! Much appreciated.

I was wondering if it was true that when you smoke, you should always light cigar with a match or a torch? I have heard mix thoughts from those who I smoke with on occasion, but they are far from experts. Torch is the way to go. Ronson is a solid choice and very inexpensive.

I was told by a guy in canada actually that you NEVER do that to a cigar, it leaves foul odors for those around you so just let it burn out on its own. He is right! Just let your cigar die out naturally.

Third, and last, I was wondering if anyone could suggest a not so expensive cigar that could be a good smoke for an everyday smoke? I have some that I consider "nice" cigars, but IDK if they truely are "nice" but I am looking for something to smoke on a regular basis that wont break the bank. There are several threads that talk about good everyday smokes. A few I like are Padron X000 series, 601 Blue, Undercrown corona vivas. All can be had around $4-5 if you're patient.

I hope that I am not posting this in a wrong section or am going overboard with questions. I am seeking guidance from the group! Thank you all for any help! Much appreciated.
And welcome aboard!

hi!

-matches or torch, or soft flame butane. traditional zippo is bad as the fluid tastes of petrochemicals. the most important thing is to ise as little heat as you can to fully coax the foot into an entire light. and not fry your face in the process.

-BAD pet peeve of mine! it does make a finished cigar smell worse, and looks very amateurish. cigars go out on their own. drop or place it in a tray and let it fade gracefully.

-there are MANY MANY cost effective smokes threads on here, poke around a little. it depends a lot on your palate and your price point. but the padron thousands ALWAYS come up in those threads, so start there. o)

EDIT: OR, what he said!

Came to the right place with your questions bro. First, matches can be used, just make sure the head of the match has finished burning as it can taint the flavor of yor smoke. Butane torches are the way to go though, they wont ruin your stick. There are a few other options out there but matches and torches are probably most common. Other brothers opinions may differ though.
Second, there is a foul odor associated with smashing a cigar, but another thing to consider is that it can be considered bad form to do this. No sense in abusing something you enjoy, lol.
Lastly, im not sure what type of sticks you're into, but the cusano 18 double connecticut is always cheap and i havent been let down yet.
Hope that helped bro!

My $.02...
1. I always light with a torch as a Bic lighter for example will leave your sticks with a gas smell and taste. Also I never puff when I light the stick, I toast the foot with the flame until it has consistent ash on it.
2. I never smash my cigars out, as I usually smoke them to the end. Best way is to let them burn out for the reasons you've described and it makes your ashtray easier to clean. Just dump the ash and wipe it out.
3. RB Genesis the Project, La Riqueza, El Triunfador, Tat Havana VI, RP Vudu, Onyx Reserve. You can find deals on these usually...

Again, this is my opinion only...

Thanks everyone, So far I have looked non amateurish lol. I let them burn out, because it have been afraid to look dumb in front of other smokers! I will peek around the threads and the internet for some suggestions on cheap daily smokes. (I like the more expensive ones for special occasions).

Does anyone have a website or cigar vendor they prefer to use? I have heard cigarbid is pretty sweet? Thanks again everyone, Im now off to venture the forums!

I think there's some solid advice given for sure. I would add that I am a big AJ Fernandez fan and love the Diesel and Man O' War lines and if you bid correctly on the bid you can get them for the cheap. Though they may not be a "beginner" smoke. The Genesis by RB that someone mentioned is good smoke and fairly reasonlable. (Woo-Hoo 50th post!)

Cigarmonster.com would be a place to hit up daily to see what the deals are.
While this is true, we also like to point out that many of the site sponsors run great deals...

I get emails from Atlantic, Emersons, and Cigarking with great options for sticks that could work as everyday smokes (I'm just not an everyday smoker).

Go on Cigars International and get Padron Panetela for $3.50 a stick. You will never ever get a better smoke for that price. Oh, light your cigar however you want man. ;)

This, like a lot of things, comes down to preference. There are some who swear the butane from the affect the flavor of the cigar in a way that matches don't. I personally can't tell the difference, but I seem to get a more even result when using the torch. As long as I've toasted the foot slowly, the torch seems to provide better results. If you do end up trying matches, make sure to let the chemicals on the match head burn off before you light the cigar, that sulfur taste is WAY worse than any butane! In either case, the goal is to toast the foot, not to torch it. How you light is much more important than what you light with.

I was also wondering if it was true to not smash your cigar into bottom of ashtray when your finished with your smoke? I was told by a guy in canada actually that you NEVER do that to a cigar, it leaves foul odors for those around you so just let it burn out on its own.

Yup. Let the cigar die on its own.

That's going to require more information from you to get a good result! Let us know a lot more about what you like to smoke now, and we can recommend stuff that's similar in profile.

There are some "purists" who insist that you should only use cedar matches, but I personally don't know anyone who doesn't use a torch lighter. I only use matches if they're all I have available. You just can't beat the convenience and portability of a good torch and like others, I can't tell any difference in the taste.

I was also wondering if it was true to not smash your cigar into bottom of ashtray when your finished with your smoke? I was told by a guy in canada actually that you NEVER do that to a cigar, it leaves foul odors for those around you so just let it burn out on its own.

Yup. You were told correctly.

There have been some great recommendations already. I really like the Padron X000 series myself. Haven't tried them all but all of them I have tried have been very good. How much is "not so expensive"? I found the H.Upmann 1844 Reserve Demitasse (4.5 x 33) is a damn tasty little sucker and it's only about $2.25 a stick. They are pretty small, though, but good for a 30-45 minute smoke. I've also found myself really enjoying the Punch Elites Double Maduro (5.25 x 45) which run about $3.00-$3.50. Those are about a 60 minute smoke.

Welcome to the community! There are some great people here with some great knowledge to share.

I like Cigarmonster whenever the Monster Mash is on (for me it's 8am PST-9am PST). Great selection, and free shipping.

I do look at cbid occasionally, but much less often. I also check the "cigar deals" thread here on a regular basis, as most of the good stuff will pop up there. Register a separate e-mail for your cigar shopping, and you can get signed up for all kinds of mailing lists for specials and things from different retailers as well.

Thank you so much everyone, I am looking into some cigars to sample for now. So this way I have a better idea of what I want to try as an "every day" smoke. I know its not a cheap past time, but I want to try to save from breaking the bank while in the learning phases! I like a mild to medium body for now. IDK if this helps with any ideas, but I am checking into the deals page for some samplers that would give me a good idea of what to look into a box of. Thanks guys I appreciate the help!
