my nephew just started smoking cigars not too long ago and he is going away to school. I was interested in buying him a 50 cigar humidor to start out with. I know JR usually has adequate ones that work and are inexpensive, there's always the good old tupperdor, and if I want something cool and functional there is the ammodor, which is a little too expensive as a starter, but would probably take a good beating from a college student.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I still use my original 50 count cheapo desktop as a "now smoking" humidor. It was maybe 30 bucks from I believe cheaphumidors.com.

My advice is to just do that. He could always still use it down the road for dry boxing or something. JMVHO.

As a current college student, I say go the tupperdor route. That's what I did when I went away, and it was great. No fancy display piece for people to pine for and fondle... wondering what valuables are inside. I kept it in the bottom of my closet, so the "pop" lid worked a lot better than the hinge lids on humidors.

I say a 50ct too big I wouldn't spend much he's a college student going to have a lot going on. . Best thing just go with a simple tupperdor toss in some cedar a boveda and your good to go. that way you won't have to worry about leaks, seasoning etc.

Tupper or travel... Either way, he doesn't have to worry about it, and can stay focused on the books.

Thanks guys - I tend to agree on the tupperdor or small coolerdor since they are less labor intensive than a standard humidor. There's always a cheap ass humidor from JR since that what I started with almost 35 years ago. I bought when I went to their huge store/warehouse. I used it for years until I outgrew it - my dad is using now since he outgrew his old one.

Question if I go the coolerdor route, since I haven't used one in years - is there any humification device that works better than others - esp. long-term for low maintenance (after all he's a college student).

Thanks for the college student's viewpoint - he will be living in a house with a couple of other friends. It's been 35 years since I've been in college and don't remember much of the experience anymore.

If youre going the cooler route.. and want to keep things inexpensive..

$4 will buy you a bag of meme kitty litter from wally world....

search some threads in this room on the use of KL.. its pretty easy... very inexpensive.. and $4 will cover your needs for a couple of years...

If youre going with something smaller, like a medium sized snaplock container... a single boveda pack should cover you...

Boveda for sure. could go with beads but you'll have to spritz them down every now and then.
