Guys,

New cigar smoker here. I want to build a coolidor but currently only have maybe 20 cigars with another 10 on the way. I know my collection will grow quite a bit (and quickly) once I actually have a place to store them besides temporary plastic bags with humidification packs from the B&M.

I am gonna get a large sized cooler and my question is can I store my 20ish cigars in there without any problems? I assume I should fill the rest of the cooler with empty boxes and then just put my singles in a couple boxes on the bottom?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

You should stop by the intro section and introduce yourself.

why the rush for a cooler? don't get me wrong cooler is the best bang for your storage buck but if your currently storing straight singles a tupperdore may be more effective solution. In answer to your origional question, filling it with empty cigar boxes will help maintain a steady Rh. There is also the option of using a 6qt cooler since your only storing few cigars.

Here is a link to the Introduction area where you can tell us a little more about yourself.

Yeah you can go right for a coolidor if you would like and fill the empty space with empty boxes from your local B&M and then use some cedar trays to hold the singles or even store them in the boxes you get.

To learn more about some coolidor things a quick search will yield a great thread. Here is a link

When I assembled my first coolidor I just bought cedar trays from my BandM and put them inside, but it was a small cooler. Then when I upgraded to a larger coolidor I bought another tray and several boxes to fill up space, fill with singles, and help with the RH. Then when I up graded to a wineador....well you can see where this goes. This slope is a fast one my friend, have fun!

Winedors hold less than coolidors correct?...honest question here
There's no direct correlation because winedors and coolers come in varying shapes and sizes. A 40 bottle winedor would be bigger than 6qt cooler. Or a giant igloo cooler would be larger than a 4 bottle winedor. Make sense?

well naturally lol...guess I should have been more clear. I am unfamiliar with winedor sizes, I just know they look cool lol. I currently have a 120qt coolidor...how big of a winedor would I need to equate to that? Not to get off topic though...so to address the OP...I think coolidors are your best bet for the money and offer expansion

Wally world sells a cooler I think its an igloo it comes with a free small cooler about lunch box size. Pretty cheap, think its under 20 bucks. Use the small one for singles and get the large one ready for boxes.

I have 3 coolers and 3 humis. And have been shopping for 2 winedors for a few months. Been picky.

Cigars have been an ever expanding hobby for me. Wait till we turn u over to the dark side and introduce u to the fine world of pipes and pipe baccy. I had to buy a hutch for that lol.

Grrrrr,

Did you settle on a wineador choice yet? If not, I wanted to make sure you saw my post from Wednesday about the NewAir I just ordered:

Hinging on whether or not you have a Discover card and Best Buy RewardZone membership, you can get the final price on the $260 unit down to around $180/ea.
The 20% off code is good through next Friday and may take the pain out of buying two identical units right away!

Take care!

To directly answer your question, with only 20-30 cigars, I'd recommend getting a Tupperware lined with Spanish Cedar from a cigar box. You can get empties at your local B&M, and a tupperware costs a few bucks. Throw a 65% Boveda and a couple pieces of spanish cedar and call it good. When your stash gets bigger, grab a larger tupperware for another couple bucks.

Second, the best advice I can give you as a new cigar smoker is don't build a collection yet!!! I wish I had listened more to that advice when I started, I've wasted a lot of money on sticks I've grown out of, or sticks I bought that I never actually liked but bought based on hype, or even more common, sticks I bought because I was "getting a deal". It's not a deal if you don't like that bundle you just bought, that's just wasted money!

The best advice I've ever heard is this: Buy singles of cigars you want to try. If you loved the single, buy a fiver and smoke through it. If you loved the fiver, buy another giver and smoke through that. If you still think it's box-worthy, then and only then should you buy a box.

Don't get caught up in what others are buying. First, you'll go broke trying to keep up. Second, you'll end up chasing a lot of cigars based on rarity, hype, or what others are doing, and not based on what you actually like to smoke. Go slow, sample a lot right now, and let your palate develop.

Also, decide over the next few months or even year or two how frequently you're going to smoke. If you're a twice a week smoker like me, you need a significantly smaller stash than someone who smokes one or more daily, and so having a huge stash is pointless. And unnecessarily expensive.

Finally, ss a new smoker, your tastes and your preferences will change dramatically over the next couple years. Cigars you love now, you might consider barely smokeable in a year or two. I know this has absolutely happened to most of us here.

So start slow. Sample everything. Let your palate develop. And then in a couple years, when your palate has developed, your preferences are more or less set, then start to build that collection.

120qt cooler is going to be pretty close to a 28-bottle wineador - both are roughly 6 cubic feet inside, give or a take a bit. What you can fit in there all depends on how you're storing.

That makes two of us. Honestly when people are willing to give you that kind of advice and knowledge listen! but more importantly try to follow it as best you can so you don't make the same mistakes they once made. I have been very fortunate to have been smoking cigars for a while now thanks mostly to the generosity of a few solid friends but just recently started buying and storing a stash of my own. If you look in my cooler I probably have around 60-70 cigars and not a duplicate in the bunch! One of the best pieces of advise above and one that i have gotten from a lot of experiences guys is to try as MUCH as you can before you start tying yourself down with boxes and fivers. Plus smoking something brand new each times is not only way more fun imo but it really give your palate a work out and a chance to grow at an exponential rate.

good luck man and enjoy!
