Well, I smoked my first aged Opus tonight, a 2006 Opus X Perfexcion.

I totally get the hype now.

I had smoked a power ranger and a corona a while back, both with a year, year and a half, on them. Wasn't terribly impressed, and haven't revisited Opus since. Took an chance and bought a pair of aged Perfexcions from a guy on another board,, and let them rest for a couple weeks. Smoked the first on tonight, and wow! What an incredible array of flavors! With the years on it, it really develops into something special. Very complex, lots of subtle changes. I've got a full review I'll post tomorrow, but man, the hype is real.

I'd probably argue that Cubans provide better value, and will still be my preferred profile for lighter-wrapped smokes. The Monte GE is around the same price and edges the Opus out (for me, anyway) but until now, I was pretty happily contented with just two mental categories of smokes I pursued: the Cuban profile for my lighter-colored smokes, and my Nicaraguans (Ligas, Tats) for when I wanted to go darker. The Opus doesn't really fit in either category, and is a pleasant addition to my mental category of desireable smokes.

Now to figure out how to afford a five-year supply so I can replicate the experience...

I've never been patient with any Opus I had. I think about 6 months is the longest I ever had one and that was just due to the fact my dad had bought a box for us to split.

Reading your opinion on the difference may make me put a Opus in a friends humi so I won't smoke it lol.

I hear ya ninja...same thing happened to me. I always loved me some Fuente but stayed away from the Opus and higher end stuff due to price. Was gifted a young Opus a few years back and thought it was good but still not worth the coin. THEN, I believe I received one in a trade with a few years on it and really loved it! Was yet another slippery slope after that... Still don't have too many in the humi tho and usually only smoke on occasions due to how expensive they can be.

I had an opus perfection number 2 that had about 6 years on it. That cigar was remarkable; tons of sugar cookie, cinnamon, oak, and that soft "opus esque" flavor. Aged Opus are WONDERFUL...

Sugar cookie... totally! I was trying to describe that flavor but couldn't put my finger on it. Was thinking vanilla, or graham... but it's totally sugar cookie.

Opus is a great cigar, but not very budget friendly. I've had two Power Rangers sitting in my humi for 10+yrs. Never planned on keeping them that long, but now that I have, i am having a hard time putting the torch to them. I doubt they are getting any better at this point I am more or less just challenging myself to see how long I can go before giving in.

I have a couple 4 year old sticks waiting to be smoked. Not sure when I'm going to smoke them because I know I'll probably never be able to let another pair sit for that long again! I usually give them 6 months to a year and then the temptation is too great for me to handle!

I'm not touching any of my Opus or Anejos for a few years.

Though I might make an exception for one Anejo shark.

I would like to try an aged Fuente. I recently got into cigars and very new to aging. Price point is hefty though.

I have always loved FFOX and aged ones are really special. When smoking FFOX with a few years on them the smoke seems chewy with tons of raisin flavor.

Its nice to see people getting it. Seems there was a time when it was cool not to like Opus and say they dont live up to the hype.

Maybe it's that there is now so many NCs at the same price point to compare them to.

Really, interesting? I always heard the major gripe was too strong. Me, I like strong cigars so not a problem. But the too cool for Opus is a new one to me. Maybe it was before I started smoking.
