Taste Buds Went On Vacation, Didn't Invite Me

Since I retired back in February I’ve been smoking a minimum of two cigars a day. I think it was this past Monday I came to the realization that I can no longer taste the nuances in many cigars. Last night I smoked a PDR Small Batch Reserve and nothing was there, the pre light odor of straw and earth was there but the pre light draw as well the entire cigar gave me nothing discernible taste wise. Guess I’ll have to cut back for a week or two and see if that helps. I’ve never been susceptible to allergies nor do I have a cold.
Has anyone else ever had their cigar taste buds go on vacation like this?

I don't smoke often enough for the cigars to cause my taste buds to not function. But I have had times where I just wasn't getting much flavor out of the smokes. Never really knew why. I would just take a week or two off and see if they come back for you. Or if you just want to smoke on thru, buy some cheapies, you won't be able to tell the difference.

Happens to the best of us. Go cold turkey for a week or two, and your taste should come back on line.

Are you having a problem tasting anything else?

This happens to me when I smoke a bunch of cigars in one day if I attend an event or something. I notice the next day or two I can't taste as well when smoking.

Lots of water helps me when I get like that. I drink nothing but water when I drink something besides morning coffee. Seems to help me a good bit.

Every time I get sick (like I am now) I go without a cigar for a week to two weeks. Once I'm back in the game, I can taste and discern every flavor in my first cigar.

Take a break and you'll savor that next cigar.

Years ago I used to smoke 4 to 7 cigars a week. Over the years due to health I've cut back. Right now I only really smoke 1 cigar a week (sometimes 2) - usually on the weekend after dinner. I find that smoking after dinner really helps bring the enjoyment out of the cigar more.

My dad swears by Rev's water comment also - he always has water in a separate glass with his beverage of the evening - so there must something to it.

PS - I'm close to retirement.

I've suffered from allergies for years and I am just resigned to the fact I will never taste what I used to. I still enjoy them but just can't pull out the nuisances that many describe so memorably. I'll try the water trick as I usually pair a beer or bourbon with my smokes.

Interesting replies... As i had mentioned originally, no allergies, no cold, no other respiratory ailments.
While I typed the original question I was thinking about not smoking for a week or so. This will certainly be a challenge as Friday afternoons are one of the more popular times for the social gatherings at my favorite B&M. Wish me luck!
