Whats up Everyone ..

I looking for some recommendation's on gun safes. Not to many places carry gun safes in NYC outside of dicks or sports authority and the ones they do carry seem to be them flimsy tin one's. So looking online you see there's many to choose from but can't really tell first hand.
So i am asking my Fellow BOTL what do you use and if you know of any place to get a good deal on one.

I have my rifle and shotguns now locked in a case in the closet, but i am in the process of getting my pistol permit here in NYC (wish me luck) so i think its time i upgrade to a safe

Any and all insight would be appreciated

Just like I ask people buying a new gun: What's your budget, and what do you want it to do?

If you're just trying to keep children out, basically any ol' safe will do. Pick one that fits the quantity you need.

If you want to keep burglars out, and with a fire-rating that's actually worth something... don't buy a gun safe. You have to buy a REAL safe, as in bank quality.

Also what kind of access are you looking for and quantity. On one hand you're talking long guns locked away sounding like big and for storage purposes but then your trigger (yep) to get the safe is getting your pistol permit making me think locked up but small with quick and easy access ...

My apologies for not being a little clearer. . I am looking to keep the guns secure from my son and also god forbid a intruder but also want to have easy access in case I would need them in a pinch. When in fact i did get my pistol permit i assumed a locked box in the night stand would suffice .. Im thinking more long term as I would start to build a collection as of right now I only have one shotgun and one rifle as here in NYC you have to wait every 3 months to make a purchase but with hunting season approaching i foresee another gun purchase in the future and a pistol purchase when the permit is approved.

One of those "flimsy" safes youre looking at would fulfill all of those requirements.. they bolt to the wall/floor.. and have a simple key lock (fast to get into).. they would make it difficult enough for a theif to give second thoughts to trying to get into it or to haul it off.. etc.. as well...

the biggest advantages to them IMHO is 1) cost 2) weight... if you live in an apartment.. or want to put them on a second floor, etc.. not a problem... they weigh next to nothing.. are easy to move around, up and down stairs, etc... and they are very affordable...

the biggest disadvantages to them IMHO are 1) not fire proof 2) weight... not fire proof/resistant is self explainatory... regarding weight.. even though one of the gun lockers bolted to the floor would present a challenge to a thief.. it is a possibility that he was determined enough he could just yank it up and haul off your locker full of guns... no one is doing that with a "real" gunsafe capable of holding multiple long guns.. unless they come seriously prepared...

If you are looking at actual safes and not lockers... most of the big issues have already been addressed by others.. budget is going to play a big role... also.. how big of a collection do you have? and how big do you anticipate the collection getting? how quickly do you want to be able to access the safe (key lock, wheel lock, biometric reader, etc..)? how fire resistant do you want/need it to be? etc....

Ive got a cannon patriot p22 that I am very happy with...

its more safe than most people need I think.. but Ive got a wide variety of long guns (hunting, precision, plinking, tactical, etc..) and needed the space... I do not keep my "home defense" weapons in this safe though (would take too long to access..)... for the "bedside" gun I use a gunvault 1000 that I picked up at Gander Mountain... pretty affordable.. provides very quick access to the weapon if I need it.. and slides right under the bed...

more than enough to keep the kids away from the pistol...

for quick access to a firearm recommend
Fort knox Pistol box

As for a larger safe it basically comes down to your budget. here's a video where guys does pretty good job explaing the differences in a makeup of a safe. skip to 3min in, that's when they start talking about safe construction.

My opinion, and only my opinion, stick with liberty safes. They do an actual fire rating from when the safe reaches the temp that they are rated for and the length of time they list. Some of the other companies start the timer when the fire is lit so you won't get the full time of the rating. Also, buy bigger than you think you will need, like a garage, it's never big enough. I started out with a huge safe and now i am thinking about a third, we ended up storing valuables, papers, my dads stuff when he passed away..... all kinds of things that i never considered when we bought a safe. But that is just my opinion.

So I went with a 36 gun Cannon Armory Series gun safe I searched all over to see who had the best price and believe it our not home depot did they were 200 cheaper then everyone else and the safe came with the dehumidifier rod on top of that I had a 20% off for home depot and I used the home depot card and got 18 months no interest plus Free shipping only down side takes about 3 weeks for delivery. Now I just have to fill that bad boy up.

Thanks for all the help !

So update on the safe.. it was suppose to be delivered last week but there was a mix up so home depot called to apologized and because of it they gave me a additional 15% off the total. Was upset it didn't show but was happy to save a little more money its suppose to be here by Friday we shall see .
