Is this a real smoking technique?

Okay so maybe you guys can help a noob out. I retrohail. As in I blow a porton of the smoke out of my nose. Used to be only 2-3 times a third now every draw. I love it. It helps me taste more. Today I'm sitting in this cigar club I just discovered near me. I'm talking with this old timer. He was 72. And I retrohailed as I know it, and he looked at me like I was crazy and asked why I did that. When I told him he said " that is not retrohailing son. Retrohailing is when you take a draw blow it back into the cigar and kinda pull the smoke back and forth in the cigar a few times and then draw it in like normal." I tried this and it did actually give the smoke a good bit more flavor and was way cooler. So now I'm lost lol. I googled retrohailing and everything I have read says its exhaling through the nose. So anyone know what the old man told me to do is called? Or is this just something he made up lol.

So the guy was telling you to purge, and then re-draw a couple times?!? Strange.

The only time I have ever "blown back in" a cigar is when I am trying to purge any sour tar build up. The trick with that is that it re-introduces a bunch of moisture (like when you are blowing into a horn, and have to release the spit valve) and could cause your cigar to go out on you if done with frequency. Not sure why you would want to do what the guy was suggesting... at least not too often.

now, blowing ONCE through a cigar, a "purge", can help off flavors, and sometimes help correct a burn issue, but doing THAT ^ just seems to beg for overheating or getting tar-balled.

Not quite a purge I should have been more specific they way he showed me with his cigar almost no smoke came out of the foot. You blow the draw back into the cigar but not hard enough for it to go out the foot and then kinda take tiny draws back and forth moving the smoke inside the cigar then take a full draw lol. It tooke watching him like 5 times and then another 3 tries of my own to get it. Its strange. I wonder if he just made it up. Hahaha.

Yeah I know I overheated it. He claimed with practice it wouldn't overheat but I have no clue. I was just like wtf?? Lol.

at 72, you tend to tell stories ...

like that one
^lol!

I can see how theoretically, one might be able to draw more flavor as the smoke passed back and forth over the leaves and picked up more oils along the way... but I don't see how it could be done without overheating the cigar.

Whatever that is, it's not retrohaling.

I have been searching all morning and the closest thing I can find is called breath smoking and its an F-ing pipe technique. I am guessing the guy is confusing cigars and pipes because this is basically what he said to do with the cigar only without using your nose you just draw like normal. Thank you all for taking the time to help me out with figuring out what the hell this was.

Did this old man ask you to get his keys out of his pocket too? I've seen this guy on Family Guy before...
