Hello BOTL,

So after some time of limping along with a tired hand-me-down traveler sized humidor, I now have some new gear coming to me in the mail. I think I'm all set as far as seasoning and maintenance [thank you BOTL info], but I am a bit concerned regarding storage temps. Here in the Houston area we are known for some serious triple digit temps, and to avoid the serious triple digit electricity bills we keep our house around 80F in the peak of Summer. I know this ambient temperature may not translate to an actual humidor temp, but I am fairly confident the stogies won't be resting at a cool 65F. So, on to my main concerns:

1) Will I run a risk of damage to my cigars if stored above 70F?
2) Are there alternate means for maintaining a lower storage temperature aside from my home's central A/C unit?

Thanks to all that may be able to offer a word or two!

I never want my temp above 70. Just what I like and above that I get a little nervous

Sounds like you want a wineador. That's what a lot of dudes use, including myself

1. Yes. For one thing, temp swings can cause swelling in your cigar, which can in turn cause cracks, bursts, etc. Secondly, beetles hatch above 70*, so if any of your sticks have larvae, you're also at risk for that. Third, even if the first to things aren't a problem, the temp swings also cause swings and fluctuation in your relative humidity, which can cause your cigars to smoke and taste less than ideal.

2. Get a wineador. You can usually find a winecooler with a thermoelectric cooling system on craigslist for $50. It'll help keep your stogies cool without messing with the rH too much.
