Now that I have your attention...

I've been noticing lately the search for "elusive cigars" and can't help but recall stock news footage of Christmas time furor for Furbies, Tickle-Me-Elmo's, Beanie Babies, et al...

Habanos/Altadais is fully aware of the panic buying that we humans all seem to suffer from when it comes to limited releases/editions. We will gobble them up whether or not we really want them or not.

I just wanted to hear your comments on the EL's & RE's that are slated for release this year/next year. Are you going to be seeking them out or not?:scratchhe

Are they really worth it or not?

Maybe a specific cigar in an LE but not LE or RE in general. WHile I have found one or two that I really like, it has not been consistant that LE or RE = perfection.

I am really into finding cigars that just blow me away on a consistent basis and then collecting them by year. The Cohiba esplendido mentioned in another thread is one that I have had little to zero problems and always thoroughly enjoy. Sir Winnies same thing. I have been trying some new stuff for daily smoking while putting away some treasured stuff for the special occasions , like weekends. LAst year the Upman Mag 50 was the only LE that fir that bill for me. Just my 2 cents.

In general Rob, too much dough for this man, so I do NOT seek them out. I like quality over quantity to a point. Most EL's take a long time to get to their prime smoking point. I for one would rather buy several other boxes with age on it vs taking a risk of the EL and waiting years. Even the Boli GM, I recently almost bought a 10 count box and split 5 way total, I am now glad that fell through. I may not have smoked a $40 cigar.

Are they worth it? That's totally subjective to one's own reason and tastes. To me I really can't say yes or no. Why is that? Cause I will not be buying any to make that determination just based on the money per stick factor and my overall lack of exposure to them at this time.

Chuck and Steve put it well. Generally speaking, EL's and RE's are well out of my "value" range, as are Esplendidos and similar smokes. When I get into the $12 - $15 range, there are some superb cigars to be had. However, I find that from that price point on up, the law of rapidly diminishing returns comes into effect. In fact, I find that in many cases a cigar that is substantially less expensive is often superior to the "premium" line, even when the latter is in its prime.

I'll TRY to seek out regional cigars if I like the Marca that's being represented. But in some countries, like France and Italy, where the gov't has such a tight grasp on the tobacco industry, it's almost impossible to source them. But I'm not really big into EL's much anymore :dunno:

I have a number of regional releases & only 1 remaining box of ELs (Hoyo Parts - good special occasion cigar)
My opinion is this; I will stick to my budget whether it be by 1 box of "special" smokes, or 4 boxes of normal good value smokes. IMO you owe yourself a box of special "once in a while" smokes. Even if you don't buy a Habano the rest of the year, there are plenty of smoking alternatives for $3/stick that are sufficiant alternatives for a daily burn. When you APPRECIATE a specific cigar more than normal, it can incredibly enhance the experience.

BUT!!!

The artificial hype generated around ELs or new releases can really hurt the enjoyment of the "special" boxes we may have in the humi.
(case & point) I bought a box of Sublimes as my first "expensive" EL purchase. Those cigars sucked fresh. They were bought for a once in a while supplement to a great event & to be honest, when smoked, only made me think "I'd rather have the $30 back".
I knew they wouldn't be great when young but I was hoping for a similiarity to the DCs. At least they were palatable in their extreme youth. If you are willing to lay an EL down for quite a while, I suggest doing it. If you want something to smoke now, RUN AWAY!

Well I did smoke a 40 dollar boli by the generous hand of Tripp this weekend. It was terrific. I can say that I personally don't go after limited editions. IMHO alot of it's marketing and fluff. I would prefer to go with a solid stick that has been aged at least 8-10 years.

Gran Habano Domestic smokes & custom rolls

Their blend 3 & 5 are ritcheous smokes.
Ahhh I though you were referring to items on the darkside. Yes I am familiar with the Gran Habano and favor the No. 5 blend. Also like La Perla Habana Black Pearl Rojo which comes in around $3.oo
