How full does a humidor need to be? Heres my problem. Im looking at building a cabinet humidor. I figured a couple shelves for boxes but mostly drawers for sticks. I really dont know how to calculate how many cigars itll hold but i was thinking something around 2 ft wide, 2 ft deep and 4 ft tall on top of a base with a drawer or two for accessories. This seems like the size of something retailers would call 1000 ct or so. I dont think ill ever need to keep 1000 cigars on hand and of course the cost of filling it is a concern as well. I thought i remembered reading that you should have at least 3/4 capacity in there for it to stabilize humidity wise. Is there any truth to that? If thats what I need to do i may be scrapping the whole idea and buying an end table piece that holds 600 or so.

Spring strong sweet tall green grass grow...
Go ahead and build your cabinet. You'll eventually fill it up! ;)
Just hit up your local B&M for empty boxes and pick ones that will fit and fill up one or two of your singles drawers. That should help regulate your RH and you can replace w/ sticks as you grow.
Best of luck!
(Oh, and put up pictures of your progress through the build!)

this right here. cedar is used in boxes (and humis) because it can absorb a lot of moisture without warping. dropping empty boxes in there will help take up volume and assist in stabilization without breaking the bank.

full boxes work MUCH better though. just sayin'. o)

A good general rule of thumb is this: 3/4 full is optimum because it gives the inside area enough room to push humidified air in and around your cigars. If the area is limited to half or below you will find fluctuation which isn't good for cigars to acclimate. Cedar will help in keeping RH inside at a stable number but you have to keep enough cigars inside to help absorb this RH and stay stabilized. If you overfill any container then you suffer results of overcrowding inside...not enough RH will be able to filter into your cigars where you want an even distribution of this humidified air. As the container gains in size is when you want to put equal amounts of media...at the bottom, middle and top esp. when it comes to wineadors and coolers or end tables. Even amounts of media will aid in even distribution of RH air...fans will keep this process at a better rate because of the volume inside the large containers. I'd venture to say that any container that holds over 1000 cigars should have a fan but it's not written in stone as to what constitutes when it's needed but rather common sense tends to tell you that the larger inside volume tends to be stifled w/o having the air being moved in and around.

Come back in a couple years and let us know ......I have a feeling you'll be laughing with us
I know, I know. But really I see myself wanting to have 300 or so. That's why I figure going with something in 600 range is a good idea. But I like, what I like so I will most likely build my design and see how it plays out.

yeah... I said something like that when I put together my first wineador... "this thing will hold 300+ sticks".. thats all the space I'll ever need"....

when I built the cabinet.. I told my wife something along the lines of (and thought I really meant it).. "this is really just for fun... Ill consolidate the wineador, tupperadors, and the desktop.. and still have plenty of room.. Ive got over 400 sticks on hand... Ill never fill the cabinet up.. no need.. I have more than I can smoke in 2 years.... I promise honey.. Im just having fun...." :)

Fast forward a year....

and the cabinet is completely full...

(no, you opportunistic d-bags reading this thread.. I dont need more storage space... I still have room in other storage devices..... and no.. I dont need to fill them... I have more than I can smoke in 4 years on hand now... what I need to be doing is sending more sticks your way....)... :)

Yeah.... currently in some hot water with my wife on this issue. :bickering

Went from 50 count... two desktops... now an end table cabinet... every time I said, just need a little more space, I'll never fill it up...

End table is now full... given the directive to "make room in it" as the request for a bigger humidor was denied.... :gangfire:

Well for now, I don't have someone to report to. Although shes making a good case for herself. So if I build it now, the way I want it, I mean she knows what shes getting into.... right? :eyebrow:

I started out years ago with 2 humidors and 200 cigars...presently at this moment I have 33 humidors and over 5000 cigars. As the saying goes...go big or go home. This hobby is so big in that when I started in the mid 60's choices for cigars were pretty weak and having more than 2 humis didn't make much sense. With todays inventory and brands there is so much to choose from with so many good cigars the wise man will have a humidor that he can refill from a very large cooler or tower.

Cigars just happen brother, I did not think my collection would be where it is now. I have only been really serious about this hobby since March and 2 desk top humis and a cooler full and I still seem to be search out sticks haha.

Yeah, the wife did not see the upside in the purchase of humi #2 for "my filthy hobby!" I had to explain that I have learned a lot since joining the cigar community like not having my infused and non-infused sticks together in the same box. Additionally, according to "the guys", I'm not supposed to smoke cigars ROTT, they need to age for a while and get to the perfect RH of 64.35%. She did reluctantly agree that those things seem to make since. She then asked why I have received so many online orders recently and I told her about needing to keep the boxes fairly full in order to maintain that proper RH, to which she replied "yeah right."

you should have went from a 50 count right to the 500 to 1000 count. After that you shouldn't need another one.
