I've never had anything bad to say about cheapies as long as they're not dog rockets.
Even when I had a humi full of cc's and tats, I've always been just fine with a cheapie I like. Mazurkas don't get much better than a perdomo lot 23. And a 5v gold will suit me anytime if it's had a little rest.
Just my opinion but I think there are tons of high priced sticks that don't stack up to $3 smokes. And I've always found it to be by manufacturer on that (ie ill smoke any perdomo)

for me, going back to some of my training wheel smokes is like revisiting my old neighborhood. it kinda sucks, but back when i was younger i neither knew nor cared, and now i wouldnt be here if i hadn't started there. right?
Can you provide some info on groups that legitimately send them to the troops? There are too many troop based scams out there for me to trust and of the "googled" responses I got...
I agree, since I've experienced some good smokes I've sworn off the samplers and and am getting more strategic in my purchases. I'm buying a lot more singles based on lines I've tried and liked and based on recommendations here. I did purchase a Fuente Hemingway sampler earlier in the week, but only because it gave me access to some discounted Between The Lines sticks.
My budget forces me to stay around the $3-$5 range, but I have started to enjoy the hunt for the hidden gems. Of course I would prefer some nicer sticks, but I am perfectly happy right now with what I get to smoke.

I enjoy a PAM, LP, Opus, etc.. as much as the next guy....
And I smoke a lot of the "good" middle of the road stuff (cost wise) as well....
But... there are times (pretty frequently, honestly), that I very intentionally reach for a PDR, or a Diesel, or an Asylum, etc.. (something Ive got $3 or $4 invested in..).. and pass right over the "premium" and "super premium" boxes I keep in the cabinet..
Sometimes I just want a change... sometimes I know I am going to be preoccupied and dont want to burn a $15 stick that I wont get the full enjoyment out of.. but would still like to smoke... sometimes I just want to revisit an "old friend"... etc..etc..
Probably 20% of my stash is "super premium" stuff... I'd guess that about 50% of what I keep on hand is what most people would qualify as "premium" (typical $8-$12 smoke)...
but probably 30% of my stash is made up of "yard gars"... (cheapies)....
I try not to smoke crap...
But price is only one factor... there are plenty of $15 smokes that I will pass on (taste like aged poo to me..).. and lots of $3 smokes that I genuinely enjoy (I bet Ive got 60-80 diesel UC's.. and 50 asylum mini coronas on hand right now (among other cheapies))....
Its just a matter of figuring out which cheapies fit your profile.. and which ones dont..
Man there are quite a few cheapos I still like. Asylum schizos, the Romeo Y Julieta house of Montague, Cigar Kings house blend, Snachos Panza double maduro, Flor De Oliva Golds. Just to name a few lol. That's just me. I enjoy some cheap sticks as much as I enjoy my favorite premium stick. (T-52s.)

For me, the "cheapies" are what I call my premium because that's what I can afford. I cannot afford, therefore, justify spending $12 to $25 (New York Pricing) on "super premiums". I have 1 super premium (Dirty Rat) in my stash and that was gifted to me. The rest is made up of $3 to $7 sticks that I enjoy. I've never had any of the Liga's other than an Undercrown or Opus, Padron Aniversary, etc... That is not to say that if given the right financial circumstances I won't purchase and enjoy the super premiums. Matter of fact I would love to. Just saying that for the most of cigar smokers out there the $3 to $7 range cigar is a luxury.
I too stay in the single digits when purchasing sticks and rarely justify a double digit stick, this has kept me away from the Liga phenomenon. But I have found really good smokes in the $5-$8 range and am happy with that. I have not found too many $3 sticks that excite me, but perhaps I'm just looking in the wrong places.

I will say i do like the diesel UC's and a lot of the JDN line. But I've tried smoking some of the stuff i started on and i find most of them terrible. But I'm finding there's a big difference in cheaply made and cheapy priced
