Hey Brothers and Sisters,

I hope everyone is having a great Remembrance Day...I would like to say thank you to all of you that have served and are currently serving...also I would like to thank all those that we lost.

I have a general question that relates no way to my opening sentence but I am curious if it is legal to take rocks from the side of the road or in the forest.
I live on top of the escarpment the rocks from it break and fall and litter the side of the road. I was wondering if it is legal for me to take them for my garden?
I live in Ontario Canada and I am just wondering if anyone knows of these laws?

Thanks for reading,
JM

I dont have the slightest clue... especially in Canada...

but... FWIW... I built a pretty nice fire ring at our cabin... solely out of rocks I have pulled from the side of the road (our place is about 13 miles from "town".. and requires you to travel 10+ miles by dirt road.. the sides of which are littered with big rocks.. ranging from 2-25 lbs each for the most part)..

Its probably 5' in circumference.. and 2' tall (whole lot of rocks)...

No one has ever said a word to me about it..

Sounds like you're doing a public service by clearing the roads.
I'd say go for it and if you get any heat, tell them you'll gladly put them back in the road for 'em :)

LOL ya no kidding back up real quick and let it all slide out the back of the truck LOL.

I figured it wasn't a big deal as they just collect it all and dump it anyway.

Here in Colorado you can grab any rock you want as long as you don't use machines to do so. If you can lift it you can have it. It is called rock hounding. You can't take from a national park however. Nothing can be taken from these areas, including antlers. Hope this helps you out.

Have you tried checking in with (something equivalent to) Fish and Game, or even local police? I think that would be your best bet.

ahhh live a little! lol go for it. They would never make you unload the rocks. only one who you may have an issue with is the land owner (if its private property)

Ya I just wanted some thoughts I am going to call and ask the city. The property is actually owned by the government as it is by the City landfill so I can't see why it is an issue.

My biggest thing is if someone says you can't have it and I need to put it back if I ask do I put it back where I found it. Just to be a smartass lol.

I figure if you are not obstructing traffic and the rock is a road hazard, you are doing a good Samaritan act. Saving them money even.

That is what I am hoping for. The place I'm looking at too has an inlet to park your car where it won't obstruct anyone at all. Also where the rocks fall from is close to the road edge but I can pick them up from the ditch side so I'm not on the road.

Lol thanks flyboy I'm sure I will look into it.

Point one thing out to me. What does this barcode you speak of look like.
Vertical lines on a white background with an SKU number of course.

Bahaha thanks brother. I will watch out for them lol. Or I will pick those particular ones up and return them to Home Depot for a refund on something I didn't buy lol.

Flyboy I think you just gave me an idea lol

I'm going to say it's illegal........ In Canada. Only place I know where in Ontario you have to call your local government to have permission to cut down trees (any trees) ON YOUR OWN PROPERTY,

Meh I just cut a huge tree down in my backyard about a month back lol. Ya it is weird that I need permission for everything even to build a shed lol.
