Just cracked open a box of Illusione Rothchilds tonight from my coolidor. After a few puffs, this happens:

I have had it happen with other sticks out of my daily stash, but am wondering if I have humidity issues or I just shocked the cigar by unwrapping and then smoking it right away.
I got this box a few weeks ago and it's been sitting in my coolidor at 67%\68F since then. It happens rarely to me, that's why I usually never worry about it. But this was my first out of the box, that's why I have concern...

i have had it happen with really dry cigars, but a few weeks should have been fine.

Unless they were more dried out than usual. I would let them rest a while longer and try another in a few weeks. I am not an expert though. I am sure one will chime in.

I posted this on another forum a few minutes ago in a thread about temps. I know you said your temps are fine, but it's something to consider.

My wineadors are stored in a finished basement. It's pretty cold down there because I'm not a millionaire and keep it cold unless I'm down there watching TV. It's been a cold and snowy week here in Maryland and the temp inside the wineadors was 61º when I grabbed my cigars for this weekend out of them. All 3 of the sticks I've had so far this weekend had wrapper issues that I can only attribute to the colder temperatures since the humidity is stable at 65%. I'm going to have to up the temps a bit.

It is 69F down there and in my garage where I unwrapped the box. I'm going to wait it out until I have another and see if it was fluke or not. With the temperature issue, my cigars sit close to the floor which is cooler in my garage where I have my 2 wineadors. The temp sits around 60F in there right now and has for about 3 weeks. I was thinking about moving them to the basement, but have not noticed anything wrong with them at that temp thus far. The temp in the garage fluctuates but the wineadors have been sitting at 60 pretty much steady.

I had the same thing happen to box of No.9 that were sitting in my cooler around 65-67 RH. The temps weren't too high either. The feet started cracking. I think it was because the boxes were stacked and the moisture wasn't getting to the No.9 .. Since then I've moved them and I'm leaving the box open hoping I can salvage them. Not sure if that's exactly what happened to your Rothchildes but, Live and learn. I have Rookie problems lol.

I also read about this happening in colder times of year. It could be that your garage is so dry it is leeching the moisture out of your stick as you're smoking. might be a thought. that would cover it happening over different sticks at different times.

If it becomes an on going issue buy one of those Vicks humidifiers. Run it on a timer once in a while.

Edited my above comment for grammar. Heaven forbid I make an error posting before I had my coffee.

Ha thx man. Maybe you're on to something. But I was thinking my garage humidity would be alright because there is always snow melting off of the vehicles as they sit in there. I should really have a hygrometer in my garage to check.

I've had that happen on a few occasions with various cigars. My cigars sit in a tupperdore on the floor of my home office which is on a slab and at the corner of the house. The temps lately are staying at 61 to 64 degrees in the tupperdore depending if it's day or over night. humidity at 65 to 68 again depending on time. Humidity seems to rise overnight to 67 to 68 and retreat to 65 to 66 during the day. don't know why. Anyway, I've had a few cigars within 10 -15 minutes of lighting expand and split open the wrappers. This hasn't happened in a few weeks but could it be just shocking the cigar with temp and humidity differences? I only smoke outside or in a car with open windows unfortunately and wondering if it's the same issue. I'm definitely going to put a 65% boveda in there so it maintains the 65% consistently.

Question: Does it happen to the cigars you take out of the wineadore to smoke? If not then those sticks are acclimated to the smoking environment already. Try taking a few of the Ill. Roth and placing in the wineador for a week before smoking. If the wrapper doesn't come apart then it's the environment shock.
I GUESS!

I did not read all of the responses so I apologize if this was mentioned, but were these cigars in cello? I ask because I don't think 3 weeks is enough time to acclimate if the cigars are in cello. I've left a cello'd cigar out of a humi in a drawer for 6 weeks (forgot about it) and it was completely fine when I smoked it. I know cello is breathable but I think it takes a bit more time than most realize for humidity to penetrate the cello.
