Maybe a nice Rye? Several are in the $50.00 range, Knob Creek, Mitchners US-1 Single Barrel, Finger Lakes Distilling Mackenzie Rye, Dad's Hat Rye, etc.

Your profile says you're in Warren, MI. Can I assume your friend is also there? If so, the Journeyman Distillery is 3½ hours away. They have free distillery tours and an amazing restaurant. So, have a guys' whiskey day - drive up there (bring the wives who can shop all day and then drive home), take the tour, then pay for a tasting and some food. Might be a couple of bucks more than a bottle, but it would be a cool experience and you would get to experience it as well.

And the Grande Traverse Distillery is only 3 hours away.

anything made by Buffalo trace: Rock Hill farms, buffalo trace, eagle rare, van winkle, blantons, weller, ect. all are among the best bourbons i've had/tried!

I'll throw in my 2 cents. If it's scotch your looking to get but without breaking the bank, the 12 yr Bunnahabhain is a great under the radar scotch. $45 or so. I drink a lot of scotch and this one is a bit smokey, goes well with a good cigar. It's a step up, a bit off the beaten path, and a great gift IMO.
