I have had a couple acute flare ups. I, unlike others, haven't been able to correlate it to specific diet habits. Thankfully though my flare ups are very rare, but when it does happen I take a medication.

I'll probably still eat and drink what i want. (an extent) it's not like it's a constant bother. Just 1-2 weeks max 2 or 3 times a year. I do dink a lot of beer. Or at least i did a few years ago. I'm not getting rid of my meat though! Mines in my big toe to. Most common for men.

I've had one round of it and hope I never do again!

I've heard and been told diet is the best prevention. Stay away from high fat foods and red wine. Good luck man and feel better.

If you're having it that often you need to see a doc. I was in the same boat. Your uric acid levels are probably high. It can give a kidney stones. ( learned that the hard way). Alcohol, red meat, shrimp, anything high in purines should be avoided. If you're having that many flare ups per year you need to get it under control. I take allopurinol now, have for over 10 years. Haven't had an attack since and can eat all the troubled foods.

There is a history of gout on my Dad's side. My Dad mostly has flare ups in his foot or big toe after eating red meat or drinking micro brews. Sucks right? He just has to watch his diet and he has no pain. He can take anti inflammatory medicine after a flare up, but he says eating the meat isn't worth not being able to walk for 2 days.

I had it once and read up on it. I have every single risk factor including exposure to lead. On one end it's what your taking in or exposed to but on the other end it's your bodies ability to process it all. I increased how much water I take in as well

Probably wouldn't hurt me to cut beer out anyways. My plan is to avoid the dr unless necessary. Probably is at this point but I'm going to try to change my diet first and see if that helps. Usually they don't last but maybe a week. I've only had one last more than. I'm at 6 days with this one right now

Actually my dad went to the doctors and that what he has in his right ankle. Our doctor told him things that cause it and should be moderated not eliminated is beer, red wine, red meat, high fatty foods (bacon (pains me to say that), deep fried food) and the one that shocked me and I've heard it before is smoking darts. One of the chemicals in them along with everything else can cause the swelling and pain.

Take care of yourself brother and keep us posted.

My uncle had it bad...we're Italian so red wine and tomatoes are staples in our house...needless to say it never went away for him as he was to set in his ways.

My dad has terrible problems with it... it is all diet related... big no-nos are beer, red wine, and tomatoes...

I feel your pain, had my first attack when I was 23. Concentrated black cherry juice or 100% juice black cherry juice. You can find it in the natural food aisles of most grocery stores or health food stores. The concenrated juice works the best take 2 tablespoons at least 3 times a day. Also motrin for pain and drink lots of water to flush your system. For mild attacks the above will clear it up for sever attacks go see the Dr. a couple days on meds will cure it.

I've had it for several years, a couple attacks per year. Since the first two attacks, I am usually able to prevent significant pain. I don't like continuous meds so I don't take a daily maintenance drug. Www.goutcure.com has some good educational material and sells a booklet on foods, diets, etc that is pretty informative.

Yep as mentioned it's due to a buildup of uric acid and for some can lead to debilitating pain. Most people can manage with a proper diet, but there 2 or 3 medications available to treat it for those with frequent attacks. As mentioned it can lead to kidney stones, and trust me when I tell you that the gout pain will seem like a walk in the park compared to passing stones!

So many responses! Thank you all so much. I will keep you updated. Like i said I'll start off with diet before i go to the doctor for meds. I didn't realize how common this was. Its surprising since what i read online made it sound so rare. Beer will be easy to cut back. I've been wanting to anyways but now i have a reason lol. Definitely gonna be hard to cut bacon back...
