I actually use my work email for stuff that I know that I'm going to get spammed on now. I've found out that spammers will go to websites and just send an email to every address that could be associated with the site, and a lot of them get forwarded to me. I've started using Thunderbird more since my laptop got infected and someone was like "you know that thunderbird won't open anything unless you tell it to right?", but I should still check out Opera's client. But yeah, aside from work, gmail is all I use now, even with Thunderbird I can still see what I've recieved even if I'm not on the computer that's downloading emails.

My own... running http://www.scalix.com a MS Exchange Linux alternative, in conjunction with Outlook. Worth the little extra effort to manage my own because I don't pay an exchange hosting fee and my email, contacts, calendar, notes, etc all follow me regardless if I'm using the web client or outlook client. I am also able to sync all the above with my Windows Mobile phone (Nextel).

An email provider gives you the back bone to send and receive email

The client is the software that allows you to use that backbone
