I was in the hospital mid December and through the holidays because I needed more intestinal surgery (my third) for Crohn's disease. It will be a few more months before I even think about having a cigar (I haven't even had a craving for chocolate, Pepsi or any of my other vices). Since smoking cigar/cigarettes is bad for Crohn's disease (but good for Colitis - go figure). I'm was down to about 135 pounds (I'm 6'6") and I won't be going back until I fully heal - sometime in mid February

Anyone else ever stop smoking for extended period of time due to a surgery? I'm just curious how long it took before you felt like smoking again.

Sorry to hear that man! Yes smoking with Crohns or colitis can lead to major flares and whilst I do thing's that are not god for my body you should give some serious thought as to wether its worth it to continue with this hobby. I actually put off spinal surgery because I needed to stop puffing 6-weeks pre-op and 6-months post-op. So now, I just deal with the pain. So you can see which decision I made, but then again there is no link to smoking and neck pain. Either decision you make the BOTLs will support you completely.

Good luck to you. I have had most of my colon and large intestine removed due to Crohn's in 1 surgery, hoping to avoid more..Surgery was in 2010 and have not had a flare since but am on medications I would rather not be on. My GI said that nicotine was good for Crohn's but didn't recommend I start smoking though (haven't mentioned cigar smoking to him).

The data on the use of nicotine to prevent flares is sort of like the data on coffee. One study shows its good for you and next one shows its not. Congrats on not having a flare in 3-years!!

Actually I have heard that it is large metabolic changes in the body that can trigger flares(among many other things) So if you smoke and quit that could trigger a flare as well as starting to smoke if you never have before. Crohn's is a weird disease in that symptoms / severity etc... vary widely. In my case I didn't have any symptoms until I was in my early 40's. Good luck to anyone suffering from it because it sucks.

After I had my gallbladder removed last year, I had to take 2 weeks off from smoking. Was easier than I thought. I hope you recover quickly!!
