So I came home today and grabbed the mail, normal bills and what not. There's the normal CI that I peruse occasionally. I started to notice that they're not carrying a lot if any Lanceros. What gives? So far I've only had 3, but they were tasty. So wth?

Yep. The average (and keep in mind any one on this site is not your average cigar smoker) American cigar smoker wants the next biggest thing. 8x80,etc. Even some of our beloved boutique brands are adding these sizes as this is what the market dictates. My guess is that the average American (probably male) cigar smoker sees a lancero or small cigar as dainty and feminine. They need to make up for their insecurity with a 13x100 size cigar. That way they can look at their "bros" and "dogs" and show off how cool they are.....

Obviously, this is just my opinion.... Lol

Lanceros don't sell enough...plain and simple. I was at Smoke Inn last week during the Kiss My Ash Radio Show, and the owner was commenting about how as much hype the lance gets in online forums and social media there doesn't seem to be enough customers. Lanceros don't sell as much compared to toros, churchills, coronas, robustos, and belicosos. Some people might thumb their nose at the bigger ring gauges, but there are plenty of great larger RG cigars that don't lack flavor. I'm not a fan of lances as I am simply not used to them, and how the draw differs from other sizes. Cigar retailers and makers care about meeting their customer's demands, and there just isn't a big enough demand for lances. The lancero fan base might be only a very small microcosm of the entire cigar marketplace.

Yup! I pull out a pc or lance when I smoke with my brother and his friends and there is always at least one comment about my "girly" or "little" smokes. All while they suck down the largest "cohiba" or "RyJ" as fast as they possibly can. Funny shit watching them turn green every time.

I found a 7x84 cigar at a bnm today- bought a drumstick instead bc it's probably my only chance to have one.

I repeat, 7x84... Who has time for that?

On a side note to make you all feel better I have seen a substantial increase in small RG sales over the past 6-12 months. Hopefully the trend continues.

a little harsh, but fairly accurate. CI will target ht emiddle of the bell curve, where most of the buying power is at. as dread points out, the smaller rings are getting attention, but by and large we here, on this board, make up the far end of the smoking spectrum, very up to date or ahead of the market, and very picky.

or, to put it another way: sam's club/ costco carries ONE of something, in bulk, that being the best sellers. CI operates the same way.

just keep buying smaller rings, keep talking about smaller rings. your power as a consumer is actually making the stuff worthwhile to make for manufacturers. pick up an under 50 at every opportunity, if it is a good blend, and we can (and, to a lesser extent so far, are) change(ing) things.

The lancero threads are all starting to blend together so forgive me if this sounds familiar, but I never even knew what a lance was until I joined the forum. I agree there is a machismo, never thought I'd ever use that word in a sentence, associated with smoking the big ring gauges. I have gotten all kinds of sh@# when smoking a lance at a bike rally or with casual smokers. In addition to the size issues, I believe that the lack of education about the benefit to a lance and the price point are also key factors that have limited the sales of the vitola. When a casual cigar buyer sees a lance for $12 or a 7x70 for $6.50 they are making a value judgement that the larger RG is a better deal. Price point is one of the issues why I don't buy more lances. Because I buy mostly singles and 5ers the average lance is about $10, while the average robusto can be had for $6-8. Granted that's not a huge difference on one cigar, but over the course of a year that's a lot more robustos in my box than lances.
