just pure speculation here: separations like that are almost always along the lines of some filler tobaccos, possibly along the dividing lines of different leaves, or along fold/ bunch lines. if the cigar was burning evenly, but one leaf of the filler, say, carbonized completely to ash slower than the rest, you get an outward pressure from said leaf: it is expanding during combustion, outward against the already burned binder, wrapper, and remaining fillers. thus, ash blossom.

at least, that's just my theory from observation. most cigars i have had like that usually burned and drew fine, you just had to be more gentle, and vigilant, about ashing.

"Ash blossom", what a great description. Is this a real cigar term or did you make it up?

I have wondered about this phenomenon also. The theory posted by javajunkie is a good one. I'll wait to hear what others have to say.

I guess you could say I made that up. I tend to have a cigar that does this every once in a while, but have not yet seen a discussion on it, and wondered what may cause it.

I might tend to agree with another reply here that it happens more with loosely packed cigars I pick....the ash tends to blossom and flake off very easily throughout the smoke.

When I physically "tap the ash", it's like the center filler is hotter burning than the outer leaves, which tends to support JJ's theory.

Interesting phenomenon.

Non-definitive answer here (as, like everyone else, I am always learning...) I always thought that this was a result of either a dry cigar that is in the proccess of recovering, or just an under-humified cigar.

I would say over humidified cigars. The tobaco leaves are more flexible, heat tends to distort leaves outward towards a cooler area. (Radiant/convected currents) I havnt seen this in years with my humis being 65rh or less.

That's a very good point. Most of the time this happens to me, it's on a gar I've gotten in new, and smoked before resting for a while in my humis.

I keep my humis between 64-66, so I'm thinking many of the online retailers I buy from store at a higher humidity for shipping.

I believe all of the T52 reviews on halfwheel indicated this. Probably not a storage thing, but something related to the actual tobacco.

Just a hypothesis.

What's a MUWATS ?
My Uzi Weighs A Ton, by drew estate, because that shit is a mouthful to type. so to speak.
As months of blending passed, I felt this blend was most noble in the 6×60 format and began calling this cigar “The Uzi.” We all had a good laugh at the name, but when I went back to their factory to pick up the round of 50 sticks, I said, “Damn, My UZI’s Weighs a Ton!” – and the brand was officially born.
Enjoy the “MUWAT”!

I had this stick for like 5 months at 65 RH before I smoked it. My guess would be something with the roll.

my father flor de las antillas in case you were wondering. Smoked another last week no problems.
