Ok. I have seen tons of posts on plastic smell removal. My wine cooler is a NewAir 280.

It did not smell until I plugged it in and the cooling and fans were being used.

I have been letting it run now for over a week and smell from cooling unit is still there. Its like a sweet smell. Notibg too crazy but easily noticed.

So I have 2 quesions.

1. Will this really impact my cigars once the cedar is inside?

2. How can I get the plastic smell from the cooling unit?

It could potential pass those odors off to your cigars. I have found 3 things that remove odors like this: a bowl of baking soda, news papers, or bread. Just choose one and put it in the Wine Cooler for a few days and let them absorb the odors.

I tried a few things when I got mine…I found wiping the inside down with distilled water and baking soda helped. I then filled it with news paper and a bowl of baking soda for couple days. (News paper seemed to help the most). Then I wiped it down with just distilled water and left it open for a day or so with nothing in it. AND DONE. Prior to doing this I tried using the bowl of baking soda alone ….did not work, just a heads up ….Also there are a ton of threads on here with additional info to the point of exhaustion :) good luck bro.

I just go tthe same fridge last week and have been working on the same thing. First thing i did was wipe it down with vinegar as an anitbacterial wash and let dry, that took about 15 with drying time. Then i mixed up some baking soda with distilled water and wipe it down, about 2cups water with a few tablespoons baking soda. This helped remove alot of the smell. Then went a step further witht that and made a baking soda paste and scrubbed it with that and let it dry and then remove it. Now that was a pain and not sure if it was needed. I think the regular distilled water with a little baking soda and just wiping it down was good enough. Then i plugged it in and put in a few (9 acutally) dishes of activated charcoal and have been running that since Sunday night. Other have told me to put it outside in the sun to help "zap" some smell out of it. I am going to try that this weekend. but in that you have to be careful you dont heat up the inside too much and warp the plastic. If you havent wiped it down yet, do what i mentioned above and see what results you get and if you are happy with. After i put it outside i will post on here the results i get and let you know.

The idea is to do too much as opposed to just enough to get by.

I had heard of 3 popular methods.

Wiping down with baking soda and DW> air it out

Wiping it down with Distilled vinegar and DW> air it out

Stuffing it with crumpled newspaper for at least 2 days (cheap version)/ putting bowl of activated charcoal in there for same amount of time (tiny bit more expensive version)

It's not crazy at all imo to do all 3.

I didn't do all 3, I did 2 though.

I wiped it down with Baking soda, then after it completely aired out, stuffed with newspaper.

That did the trick for me.

Pick any combination of the 3 I listed or better yet do all of them and you'll be golden no doubt.

PS if you are concerned about the smell in the cooling unit, (fan) stuff wine cooler with newspaper or put activated charcoal in there, shut the door, then plug it in and turn the unit on, let the motor run for 2 or 3 days with newspaper or charcoal inside.

Maybe a silly question, but where do you think the odor is coming from? Is the grease on the fan motor, or something like that?

I need another Storage unit right now, and am thinking about going Wineador this time around....

I think all of the smell is what I referred to as "new electronic smell"
Pretty much just a smell from the material from new components and factory manufacturing. It wears off after a bit.

My 281 didn't have much smell. First 3 days I just left it sit with the door open then a wipe down with vinegar/DW followed by just DW. After one more day with the door open I had zero smell but stuffed newspaper in for a day. Better safe than sorry! I'd say take your time and don't rush it. If you smell anything just do a step again until it's gone.

Pretty much exactly what I did. No plastic smell.

Would wiping the inside down actually remove the motor/ plastic smell? When the unit arrived there was no smell at all until the unit turned on.

I have never heard of anyone taking their motor apart and wiping it down. I think wiping the inside lining is all you need to do.

I will try activated charcoal. Can anyone explain what the difference would be using charcoal/baking soda vs leaving the door open?

Well, with the door open, there typically isnt much airflow. But that can change if you were to put it outside in sun (watch out for black plastic warping with too much heat). But with the baking soda/charcoal, you have the door shut and the fan running so it ciruculates the air and the soda/char absorbs the smell. I read that the charcoal has a very large surface area when measured in gas absorption.
