I'm going to be steadfast! I got a Savinelli as a gift several years ago and enjoyed smoking it for a while, but haven't busted it out for years. I think I'd better stick to one pricey avocation at a time...

I have a few sticks (including a couple of different Gurkhas) that have an earthy flavor and aroma to them. If I want to sound snobby, I refer to them the aroma/flavor as "loam" LOL

Anyway, I do need to drink something with them and I find espresso to be a good companion. Or a peaty scotch. By themselves, they get to be a bit much.

Most Gurkhas taste the same to me. ..generic earthy profile. Some of the Connecticut blends are worth a shot though.

So how is it that Gurkha is still in business? Most of the people I know don't dig them at all. So what gives? You can only make a bad product for so long before you can no longer operate. Obviously somebody likes them somewhere. Also if DE was talked about this much for having just ONE bad stick, JD would be talking about it and vowing to do better. Just saying

It's because they're not aimed at guys like us. Our little corner of the internet has it's own biases, but they're generally aligned with what's smoking well, and is more boutique. Generally stronger flavors - Tats, Ligas, etc.

The Gurkha folks are much more interested in broad, mainstream appeal, and selling a ton of smokes. Which they do. Advertising, putting their brands in primo spots at major retailers like CI, results in a crap-ton of sales of a crap ton of crap smokes, for both the guys who think they're status symbols, and buys who just want a lot of "premium" cigars on the cheap. So they make major money.

I guess the marketing scheme is working. I still haven't met a die hard Gurkha fan tho. They got me with one of those CI deals when I got back into smoking about a yr.5 ago. Buncha sticks for around $60, what a deal right! As soon as I lit up the centurion I knew I had been had. When I had stopped 2 years before I had been smoking a lot of Ashton's. There was and still is absolutely no comparison.

Today at the cigar lounge I was given a Gurkha Ninja by one of the guys. Looked like a 4x42 size. YeeeeeUCKKK! That thing had a wretched flavor. Darn thing would barely draw too and I had cut the cap clean. I really tried to smoke it.thinking it might get better...didn't want to be rude as it was a gift but I could only get through a 1/3rd of it before I had to lay it down when my friend left for home. That's my 4th and last Gurkha.

I would smoke the cellar reserve again but that is the only one I will touch. Just don't like em. When I first started I was like aww these have to be some of the best cigars out there... Then I smoked a few and did some research lol

I bought a box of Black Dragons and really liked them (off cbid for $37.00-10) I bought a Black Dragon Gran Fury (single) to see what the difference is ($3.00-1) My local B&M has the Black Dragon with a half cedar sleeve and it costs 12-15 a stick. They had the BD Gran Fury for around the same price I think, but it looked like the one I bought (haven't smoked yet) I almost want to buy them to see if there's a difference. Most of the mega deal! Gurk-ughs I won't touch but I'm sure there are some other good ones like mentioned above. My B&M has all crazy (expensive ones) I've never seen or heard of before...lol The mystery might get the better of me..

I did exactly this, thought "it's too good to be true". Turns out it was. I remember lighting up the first Beauty and thinking the whole way through "how does this RRP for $30 a stick". Never again.
