Yeah... track down Pliny the Elder... I don't think it is in AZ... but you're a lot closer to CA than I am.

Also... try to drink them fresh. Check dates on bottles. <30 days is great. I personally don't buy anything >60 days old. The bright hoppy taste fades fast.

That's a hop-forward double IPA.

The OP was about non-aggressive IPAs.

Ok fellas just want to post an update and say thank you!!! I have since developed a taste for these IPAs!! They aren't even bitter to me anymore. So far I have had hop shock, Sierra Nevada, Laguanitas IPA the stone IPA, a dogfish 90 (thanks to a regular at cigar king) and an IPA from BJs restaurant that I can't remember the name of because I'm on my 3rd Lagunita IPAs in about 20 min Lamo. Well, the REALLY hoppy ones -- 100+ IBUs -- basically wreck your palate for anything else for a few hours. That's mostly double IPAs, though -- not sure if you've had any of those.

The ones at the top are all gimmicks, as the human palate cannot detect anything beyond 100 IBUs or so (of course there's some difference from person to person). IBUs = international bitterness units. The Hop Stoopid and the Ruination, at least, are accessible in AZ.

Taste threshold is around 90 IBUs. Anything over that and most people couldn't tell the difference from 90 to 100. Measured numbers over 100 are just wishful thinking IMHO unless your dosing hop extracts. For example, I could hop a beer to 200+ IBUs and it would most likely end up around 90 measured IBUs in the final product. Pliney The Elder is a good example.
