Back when I started this hobby about 5 years ago, I used to smoke weekly with a bunch of vets who become my mentors. They would occasionally talk about this cigar or that cigar that gave them a nasty buzz. I mentioned to them that I had never experienced a buzz from any cigar. They looked at me kind of weird, and from then on out, every week one of them would toss me the lastest full bodied stick for me to try. Antanos, Oliva "Vs", Cains, Master Blends, and finally the new "killer" cigar, the Cain "F". I smoked them all during our herfs, and never felt the slightest buzz. After a while, they figured I must have an iron stomach, and gave up. That started my love affair with full body cigars, the more powerful the better. I could smoke these things on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning before breakfast, etc., and they wouldn't bother me one bit.

About a year and a half ago, I noticed that I started feeling buzzed while smoking some of my favorites. It progressively got worse. After a while, I could only get 1/3 to 1/2 way through a full body cigar before I'd thought I'd lose my lunch. Even something medium body would require snacking the entire time, or I'd get sick to my stomach. It got to the point where the only cigars I could tolerate where mild connies, or cammies like Fuentes and H. Upman Vintage.

Over the past half year or so, I started to add back in some of the old favorites that used to make me ill. I'd feel a slight tinge, but not totally buzzed out or sick like I used to. I really didn't give it any thought until today. This afternoon I was sitting outside the RV reading, and enjoyed a MBIII Torp and a T-52 rob. It wasn't until I threw the butt of the T-52 in the ash tray that I thought "wait a minute, not too long ago, either one of these cigars would have turned me green half way through". So, I guess whatever my problem was, it is now gone.

Have any of you folks experienced a weird cycle like this?

I definitelyhave not. Seems very odd. The body usually builds a tolerance not looses it. I'm very interested to hear some other stories about this.

Ill tell you when I first started smoking cigars I had some full body smokes that really just pushed me over the edge and made me puke. I built up a tolerance to them though. There is still one smoke that will give me a buzz from hell to the point I feel sick. Thats the MUWAT +11. Everytime I smoke it I can never finish it because I get sick to my stomach. I ended up giving them all away. Cold weather will also do the same. Just make me sick while im shivering. I lost nicotine tolerance when I smoked cigarettes. I used to be able to chain smoke but before I quit I could have about 1 a hour. Anymore than that and I would puke.

Tonight around the campfire I enjoyed a Cain "F" with no ill effects. That's 3 very potent cigars in 8 hours. I guess my tolerance is back where it used to be. The final test will be if I can handle a Lone Star before breakfast tomorrow.

I have no idea why I was so kicked by nicotine for those few months. I did switch a while back from regular synthetic vitamins to organic, raw whole food ones. I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

Well, it's possible that you became hyper sensitive to it. "Vitamin N" that is. I had that happen to me with coffee. I used to be able to drink it by the tanker full but one day it just really started getting to me and I can only tolerate a little now. When I work out, it gets better but still not where it was.

There are some chemicals/lotions/anything really, that after awhile of too much, your body flips the script on it and can barely handle a little.

It could come back too. Everything in moderation my friend.

Yet to have a stick I could not handle. If I give most of my friends a Camacho Triple Maduro it puts them on their a$$. Me no issue, love that little fire cracker.

My girlfriend is going through the same thing, but her tolerance is coming back. It is weird. She is like me, loves them strong. Cain F, Aging Room M356 and La Bomba are her three favorites. One day, she couldn't finish them. Now, it is coming back. So, I think it is a cycle. Like said before, the body will flip the script.

I personally have never had that happen, nor found a cigar to drop me on my ass. Not yet at least.

I do enjoy a LFD to mix it up when I'm at my local B&M. I only smoke Maduros 95% of the time. Usually, two back to back, summertime often 3. I try to fit a few in when I do smoke because I only smoke once about every 5 days as an average.

I'm the same way with coffee.

If I smoke any stick too fast I can get a little queezy. If I smoke an JDN 1970 Magnum, I'm almost guaranteed to start sweating, spitting, and getting a little bug eyed.

I am actually in a similar boat to the OP on this one. I have only really felt sick from cigars twice and the only thing that stand out to be is the fact i worked out prior to smoking both times they bit back. Thankfully its been rare so I don't know if its my body just being weakened or if im not rehydrating or eating enough.. but regardless the N is a strange mistress.

Our bodies tend to cycle in different patterns and usually when you smoke cigars your body acclimates to the strength of the nicotine....unless you've changed medications or on blood thinners. I've smoked cigars for nearly 50 years now and can handle just about any cigar out there but every now and then I'll catch the N Train and will catch a buzz. Sugars will tend to bring you back from having too much nicotine in your system. If you make a habit of eating before you smoke that will help a lot...or having a sugary drink nearby to stablize yourself. If you smoke the long cigars ( churchill ) you have to know that you are putting a lot more nicotine in your system so if you need to..start smoking smaller RG cigars or vitolas.
