cigars and mold

1st outbreak 6 months ago - only two cigars affected. Quaranteened, cleaned and reduced RH from 72% to 63-65%.
2nd outbreak yesterday - only one cigar affected.

Of the three cigars that developed mold, all were in the lower end of my collection (sub $10) and none were maduros. So my, perhaps silly, question is - are higher end cigars and/or maduros more resistant to mold than others?

the better question could be the conditions at the place your purchasing your cigars.

Nah it's just ploom. Haha JK. I wouldnt think that one strain of tobacco is more resistant to mold than another but that is a total guess.

Believe it or not, the cigars I usually find mold on are Fuente Anejos. About half of the ones I've smoked have had dried mold under the cedar sleeve, so I'd have to say quality has little to do with it. Thankfully, I like my cigars dry (60% - 64%), so even ones stored for years with this hidden dried mold have not caused problems with my other smokes.

Just like any crop, different varieties are either more or less likely to be resistant to mold, bugs, heat, or any other variety of things. I wouldn't say that that correlates to the $ of a cigar being more likely to be mold friendly. But it is possible. The science of crop growing is an industry in itself, whether it relates to corn, beans, or baccy.

Short answer though ...no. If spores are present and Given the right conditions temp and humidity, mold will grow. I would guess that humidor is in a warm place as well. 63% is a tough but not impossible environment for mold to grow. I'd guess that second cigar either had spores from the first event or was brought in from a high humidity storage environment

True enough. I'm sure we've all seen questionably maintained retail humis. One place I've gone to actually has a carpeted in the walk-in.
