I woke up about 0200 this morning with the most intense aching pain in both of my knees, on the 10 scale, this easily maxed the chart, and the pain has continued since then. I did not get a minute of sleep from 0200 because of the pain, and have been able to move very little throughout the day. I've done the usual Ibuprofen and heat, but there is no relief from the pain. I took some narcotic pain relievers (perscription of course), and again no relief at all. I went to my medic buddy that lives in the apartment complex here, and got a shot of tourdal from his bag. That got me some light relief, but he told me that I'm pretty much maxed out on the medications for the day, with the combo of the ibuprofen and tourdal, he said I could handle another 800mg of ibuprofen if I thought it would help.

I have not been doing any intense physical activity beyond the norm for me, and have previously been diagnosed as having mild tendonitis in my right knee, but have had no problems in the left, and this pain goes waaaay beyond that level. Any ideas here? I'm going to wait until tomorow and see if the pain abates any, and if it does not, I will go to the TMC in the morning....

Well, for a 23 year old in the Army, my first impression would be that it is not going to be anything serious. There are lots of conditions that affect the joints, Lyme disease, gonorrhea, etc., but I wouldn't get in a wad trying to entertain any of them just yet.

In other words, common things occur commonly, as we were all taught. Unless you have fever and other issues, it probably IS just tendonitis or something similar. Osteoarthritis can be very painful in the morning, but it's not going to hit you all at once like that.

From a drug standpoint, I use a lot of Toradol in my practice. It is a great anti-inflammatory and pain reliever, and if the problem is only that you did overdo things a little, it should help. The pain relief from 60mgs IM is about equivalent to 10 mg. Morphine without the buzz. You can take it every 6 hours, but I wouldn't take it for more than 5 days. It can cause serious GI problems.

Hope you get better.

Jeez, stop with the malingering already.

Back in MY day we put on the uniform and went to work with pain like that everyday, and we were glad to allowed the privledge of doing it!

Back then, we would have to give back one paycheck every month, and we were glad to be allowed the priveledge of doing it!

We were only allowed food every other day, and it was MREs. Not the fancy ones you guys have nowadays, back then there were only Ommlete with cheese, and corned beef hash with tubes in it. And we were overjoyed to be allowed the priveledge of eating them!

Sheesh, kids nowadays........

I think Sleepy gave good advice. The question I would have is what did you do the day or two before to bring this on. Maybe it is indeed just a bilateral tendonitis thing. If you were straining yourself the day before I would buy it. If you were to say I wasn't doing anything then I would wonder about the source of your pain. I understand why Sleepydoc asks about fever (septic joints ie infected joints) It does seem highly unlikely to me. Are your knees swollen, hot or red? I would also like to know more about your kidney problem. There are so many reason for someones knees to hurt that it would take a good deal of info to narrow it down. If you want to PM me I would be glad to help out.

Damn Doc,
I can't put together complete sentences at 4 o'clock in the morning, must less give advice. I even work the mid shifts occasionally.

BTW. Hope you're feeling much better Drew.

Ibuprofen is bad for your liver........

Tylenol is the best painrelief medicine short of percocet.......

Take a visit to a chiropractor, they do wonders.....

Tylenol can hurt your liver, Ibuprofin can mess up your stomach. I have arthritis in my knees and I take Ibuprofin for the pain because Tylenol doesn't touch it at all. It depends on the person and the pain which will work for you.

I have sort of the same problem. I use menthol stuff that makes it feel uh...better, but doesn't take all the pain away.

Stop Pain (pump spray bottle)
Salonpas patches
Tiger Balm
