Are you a good tipper?

Another thing I have noticed in my traveling and in the different places I have lived is that the economic status of the area also effects the service one gets.

In lower income areas servers actually make good livings...relatively speaking and really care about doing a good job.

In high income areas like the DC suburbs (no, I am not high income) the servers barely get by so this results in people choosing to serve as an almost last resort and they almost seem bitter and seem like they feel they are entitled to a large tip regardless of the quality of their service.

I feel that Tobby. I have always been uncomfortable tipping under 15% for several reasons. One is my restaurants are limited here. I know all the waitresses. I don't need a loogy swirl on the drink menu. They know with me they have done poorly if they get 15% on the penny and I will work it out. They know they done their job at 20% and went above and beyond at 25%. If it's their B-day and I do know some their birthdays by now I will pitch in a little extra something. I like to eat out and we have like 5 places close. I can ill afford to piss off staff.

I could see this and in this situation I would pull the manager aside especially if the waiter was disrespectful. I would lay a shiney penny with a note beside it. But that's at a restaurant I dont frequent often or ever.

Every server is like this and the managers are too...they seem to hate there job and hold it against the cutomers.

For good service I will tip at least 20%. average service is 10-15% and bad service is $1.00. I always leave a tip, so they know it was there service not that I'm cheap. Once in Dallas a group of 5 of us left $250.00 for a $40.00 bar tab. But I know they gave us several free drinks.(and the bartender was very Hot:jitb: )

The last time I ate at the Copper Grill in Richmond Va. I left a $100 tip on a$100 bill. the food was that good. If you ever get a chance eat there.

Some of you guys are too generous for poor service. If I can tell they're just being lazy then I don't tip at all. If they have a heavy table load (lots of tables) and don't come around often then I can may'be understand and still tip good.

I'm with you Cliff. I don't get all this "I tip X% for poor service." Unless that X% is less than a dollar you aren't getting your point across. Most are just going to figure you are a poor tipper unless you make a point to explain it. And in my book, even if you explain it, you are still rewarding poor service. That hurts everbody that waitstaff serves. I consider myself a pretty good tipper. I tip 20% pretty much across the board. However, if you give me shitty service, you are getting next to nothing.

IMO tipping has become far too automatic.

Now, here's a question. How does everyone tip at the bar? I mean, if I run a tab it's pretty easy, I stick with pretty much the same tip I'd go with food. But when I'm just going up and grabbing a couple of drinks? I tend to throw a dollar or two (or nothing) depending on how I'm treated. How do the rest of you handle it?

I usually leave the change and it ends up being coins I'll throw a buck down.

I.e. for one beer a fiver...keep the change...two beers, a ten spot...keep the change, etc.

For a tab at the bar or just drinks with a waitress? That usually means I have been there for quite a while, taking up seats and what not, so I will tip quite high...maybe 30 or 40% depending.

I too worked in food service for several years and I think it gives me a better perspective on their jobs and what not. Sometimes I think to myself that people should require their kids to work in the service industry at least once so they can live life with a better perspective on what it takes to be that person flipping burgers or waiting on tables.

I tip the bartender also ... but it's generally the spare change (or a couple bucks depending on how long I've been there) instead of calculating a percentage.

Depends on my mood...for handing me a drink, or pouring something just because I walked up and asked, usually nothing...
