In aviation, last year, according to the IATA, there were more than 3,000,000,000 people who flew and of those 3 billion, only 210 lost their lives, which is well below the 5 year average of 517 lost souls.

Maybe this is only interesting to me...

Doubt it. It'd probably be interesting to anyone aboard MH370. Averages have a way of proving why they're averages.
Those numbers are for last year, when next years numbers come out, I think it will show a slightly different picture. However, it is still safer than the roads...

I agree completely. Sorry. I seems that I have this strange affliction that my eyes glaze over and my leg kicks out involuntarily when presented with statistics like this. I just cannot fathom that 217 is a huge improvement over 517 when talking about a population as large as 3B. Especially when one, single commercial crash can account for more than half a year's average. The numbers just don't have any significance for me.

wondering.....whether the little girl who got run over by a fire truck in SF will be counted in last year's 217....for no reason other than to spin the little world inside my head where I can make any statistic useless

I work in the aviation industry, and I have for 20+ years. While I think that an improvement of 300 lives is good, I think we can truly celebrate when the average over 5 years is 0.

lol....sorry again....you just spun up another silly place in my head. I'm very fond of saying at work that 'Perfect is the enemy of good enough'. It really has very little application here, but I did get to wondering how low a number would be 'good enough'.....idle mind playing

Flying is indeed safer but when the Reaper comes for ya...nothing you can do about it except spit in his eye and then blow a smoke ring in his face.

One of my favorite quotes from a comedian is paraphrased "What if it's the guy in 23F's time to visit with the reaper?"

And that, is why I don't fly...

As I drive down I-95 to vacation each year, bumper to bumber at 80+ mph, I always think... I could be doing 150 knots at 7500 feet, miles from anybody and get there in an hour instead of 4. Much safer to fly than drive.

I logged 180k miles in the air (qualification miles) last year. While I know its safer, I still prefer to drive.
