So I found out last weekend that I'm getting this beast for my birthday (still over a month away but apparently my niece can only keep a secret for about an hour) I feel horrible for my wife because she put a lot of time and effort into finding this for me, even made a fake profile on BOTL to ask some questions about what she should get. But I'm super excited none the less.

I don't even have this at my house yet and I haven't seen it in person. But my plans are to pull the A/C unit and replace it with a thermoelectric one, line the inside with spanish cedar (if it isn't already), rearrange some of the shelves, possibly have Forrest make a large drawer for singles, and find some combination of active humidity and bead and/or KL that will keep the humidity solid.

So for those of you that have taken on projects like this, what advice would you give?

My main concerns is cooling. I know there are TE units out there, but does anyone have any good or bad experiences they can share? And what about a thermostat to control it?

Still looking into humidification options. The Hydra has come with good recommendations and is in line with my budget. The Avallo Accumonitor looks great but might be a bit of a stretch for my budget.

Any advice from your experiences would be great.

I'll keep this updated with pics as the build progresses.

Thanks,

D/FW. Mesquite to be specific.
Damn that big! I know I've seen it mentioned before, but if you keep your homes temps around the ideal range for your smokes, then you could just pull the cooling unit, seal it, and use it without having any need for a TE unit.

This is awesome.

As far as Spanish Cedar, I ordered this: http://www.woodworkerssource.com/hum-p-Cedar_Spanish.html

Customer service was great, product was good. MAKE SURE that you ask the to S4S, otherwise you're going to have to plane/square the boards yourself. However, if you/Forrest make shelves/drawers, I'm not sure that you would need to line it; you should just be able to fill it with full/empty boxes and it will hold humidity and deter pests just fine, IMO.

Kudos to your wife, she's a badass.

I don't think that's will be very practical when summer hits. He does live in the PHX area and just keeping the house comfortable can get expensive. ☺ Temp control should be simple enough with an Auber temp controller. I use one I put together to control a chest freezer for my brewing. Reasonably priced and can switch up to 10 amps AC. The fun will be finding a TE unit large enough or multiple TE units to cool that beast. Congrats Geoff. It will be a fun project. Now we will just have to figure out how to fill it! 😉 I can feel a birthday herf coming.

Thanks guys. I'm still in shock that she did this.

Moldman, that controller looks like exactly what I'm looking for. And I got no problem having everyone over for a herf and BBQ once this thing is up and running. Might not be soon though. I want to take my time and do it right.

Can I borrow that?
I read this as "Guys, help! I need more storage space!" We can help with that. :)

I am also in the process of building/converting a China Hutch into a Humidor. I went with a TEC Unit from Habitat Monitor.

It probably already has:
A insulated interior.
And one that is Mahogany or SC interior. Id go Kitty Litter on each shelf. And buy the Temp controller units posted above. Leave the condenser unit in there. Run it full with cigars and Kitty Litter. And then see what happens. If you stock it full of KL. Say 10 lbs. It may be able to easily handle the small drops in RH that the AC units makes.... Nice work by your wife.
