It's a really simple test for checking the seal on your humi. Put a piece of paper on the lip of the humi and close the lid. With the lid closed, if you can slide the paper out, it's a poor seal

I bought a used humidor off ebay and am having the same exact issues myself. When I seasoned it I wiped down the inside lightly with distilled water then put a shot glass of distilled water in it for a week. Then put about 10 cigars in it with a jar of Xikar gel and an Xikar hygrometer. My hygrometer only reads 61-62 as well.
I haven't tried the paper trick or the flashlight trick.

I purchased the Boveda Calibration kit, and also put a small shot glass filled with distilled water in my humidor. The kit came in two days, tested my Xikar digital hygrometer, it was just about perfect. The Xikar read 74%. I put the hygrometer back into the humidor and a day later the humidity was at 68%, now staying at 68% consistently. The calibration kit is good for 3 months, if anyone needs to test out their hygrometer, let me know and I will send it to you!
My preferred plkace to get all Boveda stuff is from Bovedas website.
It's cheap prices, easy to order, etc.
I also just want to echo the sentiment that the Xikar hygro in no way comes calibrated.
The fact that they market it that way is just messed up in my opinion.
I only have 2 of them, but they were both wrong out of the box.
Now, I do have to say that once you do get them calibrated with your Boveda test kit....they are great, they work awesome.
My only complaint with those hygros is that they claim to be already calibrated and that is a joke, I would venture to say that they are never calibrated.
