So I'm not a big Opus guy and i did a little searching on the forum and couldn't find an answer. Is there a way to determine the age of an Opus X outside of the date code on the box? HAve a couple that were gifted and would like to smoke them but the word is to age them. Don't know how old these ones are.

Your only hope is to have them in cello and wait until they start turning yellow/brown. :)

you can also pop for some of the Fuente Aged Selection sticks put out by Prometheus, but they're all at least $50 if you can find someone selling individual coffins. The BBMF holds true to its namesake. I've smoked a couple of these, and they're quite good. Tampa Sweethearts may have some left. I have some Opus X #2 that are 2 years old, and have been building my collection to age as many as I can. They're good now as well...You can also get some of the Padron Family Reserve 44 Naturals....they start with 10 year old tobacco thats already aged. these are absolutely sublime, and are worth the $$.

yeah, with fuente, your only bet is to either know the retailer, or just know when YOU got them. as aloha said, the cello will tell.

honestly, while i believe that you get your money out of opus with time, i have burned and enjoyed WAAAY too many freshies to not at least suggest burning them at the first opportunity to enjoy them. age is good, but it don't mean nothing if you don't burn it down to ash in the end. and, god willing, enjoy it in the process. o)

I've had one fresh and thought I was good not great and just buried my remaining tin in my humidor I'll check one out around Xmas and get another tin and if if goes like I think it will rinse wash repeat until I have a decent stash

I'm dying to get my hands on an angels share from what I heard its like an aged opus x

Just ordered a pair of Don Arturo Aniversario Destino al Siglo Double Robustos which maybe a tweaked opus blend I'm kind of ignorant and most of the upper echelon Fuentes but I'm going to let one acclimate and bury the other one

I just finished one today and it was too young. Lots of inconsistent burning and it stopped on my with an easy 1.5" left on it. I've had four Opuses (OPusi?) and two had draw and burn issues and both had clear cello. The other two had really yellow cello. I have a few more in the humi and I think they're staying there for at least another year or two. I'll write a note and stick it on the inside of the coolidor door to remind me.

"When the cello is yellow it will be a tasty fellow"

Wow, did that make me sound like a dork.

I find that when you smoke them young they have a lot of the Opus "SPICE" but this mellows out with age. Personally I do not like to age them too long, because I feel I miss the spice.
